Senior Litigation & E Discovery Law Clerk

Woodward & Co. Lawyers LLP is a national law firm dedicated to providing excellent legal services to Indigenous communities, governments, and organizations. We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Litigation & E‑Discovery, to fill an existing vacancy and join a talented and dedicated team in our Victoria BC, office location, to support lawyers engaged in complex Aboriginal, environmental, and natural resources litigation.

This blended role combines advanced litigation support, technical e‑discovery expertise, and high‑level practice management. You will work collaboratively across offices, support document‑heavy litigation, manage sophisticated databases, and help shape our growing team while contributing to meaningful, high‑impact work.

Key Responsibilities

Litigation Support

  • Support multiple lawyers in collaboration with legal assistants, law clerks, and administrative staff.
  • Prepare, edit, and format a wide range of court documents including pleadings, affidavits, application materials, motion records, and other filings at all levels of court.
  • Manage e‑filing and upload hyperlinked materials for e‑hearings through platforms such as Case Centre and Justice Services Online.
  • Coordinate with court registries, handle logistics, and arrange court appearances.
  • Research and summarize rules of court and tribunal procedures across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Communicate directly with courts, regulators, and government offices to obtain accurate information and move matters forward.
  • Assist with document set preparation (scanning, saving, copying), binder production, and file organization.

E‑Discovery & Evidence Management

  • Use advanced e‑discovery platforms (IPro Discovery Local, Reveal, Everlaw, or similar) and litigation databases to support complex, document‑heavy matters.
  • Manage multiple electronic databases of records in compliance with data‑management best practices.
  • Assist legal counsel with client‑level document‑gathering projects, including coordination with custodians, IT personnel, and governance teams.
  • Ensure compliance with firm protocols for document gathering, review, and production.
  • Coordinate with clients, courts, and opposing counsel regarding document exchange and evidentiary matters.
  • Participate in E‑Discovery Working Groups and e‑trial preparation.
  • Support case migration from legacy e‑discovery systems to new platforms in collaboration with the firm’s E‑Discovery Specialist.
  • Assist with discrete e‑discovery projects as needed.

Practice & File Management

  • Independently maintain calendars, correspondence, filing timelines, bring‑forward systems, and court schedules.
  • Organize and maintain complex electronic and paper filing systems, including opening and closing files.
  • Keep client files meticulously organized, up to date, and accessible, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Prepare agendas, minutes, reports, drafted agreements, bylaws, codes, and other legal documents.
  • Search and save documents using litigation databases, and document‑management systems (e.g., NetDocs).
  • Arrange courier pick‑ups, legal deliveries, and file shipments or storage.
  • Engage in mentorship to support cultural competency and cross‑functional collaboration across the firm.
  • Assist with meeting preparation, including document packages, logistics, and room setup.
  • Support general office operations as needed (e.g., stocking supplies, shredding, kitchen support, equipment maintenance).
  • Contribute to a respectful, collaborative, and values‑driven workplace aligned with Indigenous communities and legal traditions.

Qualifications
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • 6+ years of experience in litigation and/or legal e‑discovery support involving complex, document‑heavy matters.
  • Post‑secondary certification in legal assistant, law clerk, paralegal, justice studies, or related field preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office, Microsoft 365, PDF programs, and litigation software.
  • Experience with e‑discovery platforms (IPro, Reveal, Everlaw, etc.) and document‑management systems (NetDocs).
  • Knowledge of Ontario Superior Court of Justice rules; ability to determine procedures in other jurisdictions (including Quebec).
  • Excellent organization, sound judgment, initiative, and ability to anticipate needs.
  • Calm, capable presence under pressure; adaptable and dependable.
  • Experience working with Indigenous nations, communities, or organizations is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel to Indigenous communities for client work and document gathering.
Working Conditions

Fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment requiring prolonged computer use and occasional lifting of office equipment, boxes and documents. Overtime may be required, as well as travel. While the firm supports hybrid work, this role requires significant in‑office presence to support workflow and collaboration.
