Job summary

Very is a fully distributed technology firm operating in Canada with a Lead Data Scientist role. The contractor will own the data science workstream on client engagements, making architecture calls, and presenting results to non-technical owners while collaborating with software and design teams.

The role emphasizes end-to-end data pipelines, model deployment, and strong client-facing judgment, with travel up to 10%. Must reside in Canada and be legally able to contract.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field.
• 5+ years of related experience with shipped models or data systems used by real users.
• Expert Python in production services, testing, packaging, and code reviews.
• Deep PostgreSQL experience: schema design, full text search, pgvector.
• Strong English communication and ability to present to non-technical clients.

Responsibilities

• Define and estimate Statements of Work with assumptions and risks.
• Own data science components end-to-end from architecture to production.
• Design evaluation strategies and appropriate metrics for the problem.
• Ensure auditability, reproducibility, and traceability of models.
• Architect and deploy reliable data, retrieval, and ML pipelines.
• Present results to non-technical clients in plain language.
