This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Java Developer based in Canada.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to design, build, and operate scalable backend services that power real-time logistics and courier payment systems. In this role, you will contribute to the architecture of distributed, event-driven platforms that support critical business operations and high-volume transactions. You will take ownership of backend services throughout their lifecycle, from data modeling and API design to deployment, monitoring, and production support. Working with modern Java frameworks, cloud infrastructure, and messaging technologies, you will help deliver reliable, secure, and high-performance solutions. You will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and cross-functional teams in an Agile environment while promoting technical excellence and mentoring fellow developers. This remote opportunity is ideal for someone passionate about distributed systems, continuous improvement, and the practical application of AI-assisted development tools.

Accountabilities

• Design and develop backend services: Build, enhance, and operate scalable production services using Java and modern JVM frameworks such as Quarkus and Spring Boot.

• Architect event-driven systems: Develop robust event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka, Amazon SQS, and Amazon SNS, applying asynchronous processing, publish-subscribe patterns, and reliable event-handling practices.

• Implement distributed system patterns: Apply Domain-Driven Design (DDD), bounded contexts, sagas, eventual consistency, idempotency, and the outbox pattern to improve system reliability and maintainability.

• Build and maintain APIs: Design and implement RESTful APIs and contribute to service integrations using technologies such as gRPC, GraphQL, or AsyncAPI where appropriate.

• Manage data architecture: Design and optimize relational and NoSQL databases, data schemas, caching layers, queries, and migrations to support performance and scalability.

• Deploy and operate cloud services: Deliver production workloads on AWS or Azure using Kubernetes and related cloud-native technologies, ensuring reliable deployments and efficient resource utilization.

• Strengthen delivery automation: Maintain CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code solutions, and GitOps workflows, supporting safe, repeatable, and frequent software releases.

• Improve observability and performance: Use monitoring and observability platforms to analyze metrics, logs, application performance, and distributed traces. Conduct load and performance testing to identify and resolve bottlenecks.

• Leverage AI-assisted engineering: Incorporate AI coding assistants and agents into development workflows to support code generation, refactoring, debugging, and automated pull request reviews while applying appropriate evaluation and governance practices.

• Promote engineering excellence: Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives while mentoring colleagues and sharing best practices.

• Collaborate across teams: Partner with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders throughout Agile development cycles to deliver solutions aligned with business priorities and operational needs.

Requirements:

• Professional experience: At least five years of experience developing and operating production backend services at scale.

• Java expertise: Strong proficiency in Java and hands‑on experience with Quarkus, Spring Boot, or comparable JVM frameworks.

• Event-driven architecture: Deep experience with event-driven systems and messaging technologies such as Kafka, Amazon SQS, and Amazon SNS, alongside a solid understanding of asynchronous processing and distributed system design.

• Domain-Driven Design: Practical knowledge of DDD principles and patterns, including bounded contexts, sagas, eventual consistency, idempotency, and the outbox pattern.

• Database technologies: Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Amazon Aurora RDS, as well as NoSQL solutions such as MongoDB and DynamoDB. Familiarity with Redis caching and BigQuery data warehousing is beneficial.

• API development: Strong knowledge of RESTful API design and experience building integrations between distributed services. Familiarity with gRPC, GraphQL, or AsyncAPI is an advantage.

• Cloud and containerization: Hands‑on experience deploying production services on AWS or Azure, particularly with Kubernetes and Amazon EKS.

• DevOps and automation: Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, GitOps practices, and automated software delivery.

• Monitoring and reliability: Proficiency with observability tools such as Datadog or similar platforms, including metrics, logs, application performance monitoring, and distributed tracing.

• Performance testing: Experience with load and performance testing frameworks such as k6, Gatling, or JMeter.

• AI-assisted development: Practical enthusiasm for AI-powered development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code. Experience using AI agents for coding, debugging, refactoring, and automated reviews is highly valued, as is familiarity with agent‑ready repository documentation and prompt evaluation or governance.

• Collaboration and leadership: Strong communication and problem‑solving skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to mentor peers, promote engineering standards, and work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

• Adaptability: Comfort working in a fast‑paced Agile environment with continuous delivery, evolving technical requirements, and a focus on operational excellence.
