Job summary

Sargent & Lundy seeks an experienced Instrumentation & Controls Engineer for Canada-based nuclear projects. The role focuses on digital control systems, from PLC/DCS to data displays, with emphasis on safety-critical instrumentation for Candu reactors.

Hybrid work is available with in-office collaboration three days per week. Applicants should bring a CEAB/ABET-accredited engineering degree and 7+ years in process control design, including nuclear I&C and drawing reviews.

Qualifications

  • A BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a CEAB- or ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum 7 years of design engineering experience for process control systems; nuclear I&C preferred.
  • Experience with power plant instrumentation and controls design for Candu reactors, including DCS for turbine and feedwater control.
  • Knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems for system design.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Design digital control systems including PLC/DCS, touchscreen displays, and network switches.
  • Prepare functional requirement and procurement specifications for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Develop instrument data sheets and calibration sheets.
  • Prepare design input for drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Interface with vendors and prepare equipment purchase specifications.
  • Attend client meetings and conduct site walkdowns to ensure satisfaction.
  • Mentor less experienced nuclear instrumentation and controls engineers.

Description

Our electric power generation clients, both in Canada and the US, are updating and replacing the power plant control systems with new digital control systems. This is expanding work in the Instrumentation and Controls Engineering group.

Key Responsibilities
  • Digital Systems -- PLC, DCS, Touchscreen displays, network switches and control systems
  • Functional Requirement and Procurement Specifications and software categorization reports for instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power plants
  • Process instrumentation replacement evaluation reports and nuclear modification packages
  • Prepare instrument data sheets (IDS) and instrument calibration sheets (IDS)
  • Prepare documentation for design input for drawing production including cable block diagrams, connection wiring diagrams and schematics
  • Interface with vendors and prepare equipment purchase specifications
  • Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner to meet client requirements
  • Attend client meetings and perform site walkdowns to ensure the client is satisfied with our work product
  • Provide guidance as a mentor in the development of less experienced nuclear instrumentation and controls design engineers
Work Schedule

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

Essential Skills and Experience
  • A BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board‑accredited undergraduate program or a US based ABET‑accredited program
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in design engineering for process control systems; Experience in design engineering for nuclear power plant control system is preferred
  • Experience with power plant instrumentation and controls systems design for Candu reactors, including DCS for turbine, control, feedwater control, and data display.
  • Technically knowledgeable of available equipment and proven pre‑engineered systems to execute systems design
  • Experience in reviewing design drawings created by others.
Valued, but Not Required
  • P.Eng license
  • Active Ontario Power Generation (OPG) security clearance

  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI‑enabled engineering workflows.

Compensation Range

$111,304 - $153,043
