Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on hot tapping and line stopping, supervising technicians and trainees.

  • Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic and pressure issues and take corrective action.
  • Prepare and operate hot tapping and line stopping machines and equipment.
  • Work on live piping systems to complete repairs without shutdowns.
  • Install and remove equipment on prepared fittings and valves and select components.
  • Take field measurements, set cutter depth and stopping-head positioning.
  • Conduct pressure and leak testing prior to operation.
  • Set up bypasses as needed to maintain system operation.

Job description

Salary:

$39 per hour (full-time position – (30-40 hrs./week)

Job Description:
  • Perform hands-on hot tapping and line stopping operations, including the preparation, setup and operation of specialized equipment, while supervising and providing technical guidance to technicians, apprentices and trainees working under their direction.
  • Managing field-level risk assessments, running heavy high-pressure hot tapping equipment, and signing off on job quality.
  • Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pressure, leakage, vibration, and equipment-related problems and take corrective action.
  • Preparing, setting up and operating specialized hot tapping and line stopping machines and equipment.
  • Preparing hot tapping operations on piping systems while they remain live and in operation, allowing repairs, modifications and connections to be completed without shutting down the system.
  • Installing and removing hot tapping and line stopping equipment onto prepared fittings and valves.
  • Selecting and installing the correct cutters, pilot drills, adapters, seals and other machine components for each job.
  • Taking accurate field measurements and determining machine travel, cutter penetration and stopping-head positioning.
  • Performing pressure and leak testing of the equipment and setup before commencing the operation.
  • Setting up and operating line stopping equipment to temporarily isolate sections of live piping systems.
  • Assisting with temporary bypass arrangements when required to maintain system operation during repairs or modifications.
  • Monitoring the equipment throughout the hot tapping or line stopping operation and identifying operating or mechanical problems.
  • Dismantling the equipment after completion of work and safely returning the piping system to its required operating condition.
  • Inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, maintaining and troubleshooting hot tapping and line stopping machines, cutters, pilot drills, seals and associated equipment.
  • Preparing and organizing specialized equipment before jobs and ensuring all equipment and components are accounted for and properly maintained afterward.
  • Reading piping drawings, equipment specifications, measurements and job procedures as required to correctly set up and perform the work.
  • Completing equipment checklists, field measurements and basic job/service documentation.
  • Following the required safety procedures and job-specific controls associated with performing work on live, pressurized piping systems.
Job Requirements:
  • Completion of secondary school is required.
  • Technical training in mechanical systems, industrial equipment/machinery repair, hydraulics or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Five years of experience.
Skills:
  • Ability to work around live and pressurized piping systems while following established safety procedures.
  • Previous experience operating and maintaining specialized hot tapping, line stopping or comparable mechanical/hydraulic equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to read equipment manuals, operating procedures, equipment drawings and technical specifications.
  • Ability to perform accurate mechanical measurements and determine machine travel, penetration and equipment clearances.
  • Ability to safely operate specialized machinery in industrial field environments.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and coordinate effectively with supervisors, clients, contractors and other site personnel.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

Physically demanding; handling heavy loads; standing for extended periods; bending, crouching, kneeling, hand-eye co-ordination, etc.
