The role includes shaping geotechnical services in the region and building our presence. Location: Fort St.

John, BC (or Alberta) with regular travel to Fort St. John. You will mentor staff, manage investigations, and lead business development while coordinating with a broad BC/AB

Qualifications

  • University degree in Geotechnical/Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis.
  • A minimum of 8–12 years progressive experience in relevant geotechnical field.
  • Professional Engineer (PEng) registration in British Columbia (PEng in Alberta is an asset).

Responsibilities

  • Manage geotechnical investigations and studies, including interpretation and documentation of results for transportation, municipal, land development, and resource projects.
  • Conduct geotechnical analysis of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation response using software platforms.
  • Prepare fee estimates and proposals for geotechnical assignments in the office.
  • Take ownership of and drive business development and client management.
  • Manage project schedules and budgets efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide oversight, guidance, direction, and mentoring to junior technical staff.
  • Grow technical expertise to support McElhanney geotechnical teams.

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced Geotechnical Engineer looking for a leadership opportunity? McElhanney is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team in Fort St. John, BC. This role offers a key leadership position within a small‑office environment, with support from a wider network of Geotechnical Engineers across British Columbia and Alberta. You will shape the future of our geotechnical services in the region and build our presence.

Location: Fort St. John, BC (or Alberta) – travel to Fort St. John on a semi‑regular basis if not located there.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage geotechnical investigations and studies, complete with interpretation and documentation of results, on transportation, municipal, land development, and resource‑related projects.
  • Conduct geotechnical analysis of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation response utilizing a suite of software platforms.
  • Prepare fee estimates and proposals for geotechnical assignments in the office.
  • Take ownership of and drive business development (internal and external) and client management.
  • Manage project schedules and budgets efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide oversight, guidance, direction, and mentoring to junior technical staff.
  • Grow technical expertise to support existing and future McElhanney business and Geotechnical teams.
What You’ll Bring
  • University degree in Geotechnical/Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis.
  • A minimum of 8–12 years progressive experience in relevant geotechnical field.
  • Experience in:
    • Geotechnical engineering analysis, design, and consulting.
    • Seismic engineering and modeling (asset).
    • Land‑base piling analysis and design (asset).
    • Slope hazard assessments and land development projects (asset).
  • Professional Engineer (PEng) registration in British Columbia (PEng in Alberta is an asset).
  • Strong project management skills, including budgeting, financial oversight, and schedule management.
  • Strong business development capabilities, including identifying and securing new work, building client relationships, and mentoring junior staff.

Salary range: $110,000 – $145,000 per annum. Compensation is commensurate with education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications.
