The Role:

Rakuten Kobo is seeking a Senior Frontend Developer – UI Platform (6-month contract) to join our R&D team in Toronto. You will work with one of our development teams to deliver exciting new features to our customers. Our engineers operate across the development spectrum—from front-end to back-end, CI/CD, and infrastructure—and take full responsibility for their work from requirements gathering to deployment and monitoring. We are looking for a Senior Frontend Developer who shares these passions and takes pride in their work.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Software Engineering, the Senior Frontend Developer will be involved in all aspects of delivery, including design, planning, implementation, release, and monitoring.

Responsibilities:

• Design and develop web applications.
• Document development processes, conduct peer reviews, and provide actionable feedback.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand product requirements.
• Perform regression testing to validate software stability after changes or updates.
• Monitor application health and improve system observability.

The Skillset:

• Proficiency in modern JavaScript libraries such as ReactJS, NextJS, Remix.
• Experience building web components with React and Tailwind CSS.
• Strong experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS/SCSS.
• Experience developing accessible applications according to accessibility standards.
• Expertise in unit testing frameworks like React Testing Library and Jest.
• Hands-on experience with end-to-end testing tools like Playwright.
• Proficient in DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.
• Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Datadog and Kibana.
• Experience in improving page performance, focusing on Lighthouse scores.

Nice to haves:

• Experience using Storybook for component documentation and playground.
• Knowledge of containerization with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience working in a .NET environment.
• Knowledge of MS SQL and RavenDB.
