Job summary

Wales McLelland is seeking a Senior Estimator to join our team in the Lower Mainland, BC. The role involves preparing lump-sum, unit rate and cost-plus estimates for commercial and light industrial projects, with a focus on data gathering, cost analysis and coordination across disciplines.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years in cost estimating for general contractors, strong communication, documentation and leadership skills, and proficiency with tools like Timberline and MS Project.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in construction and cost estimating.
  • Formal education in construction (Diploma/Certificate) is an asset.
  • Quantity Surveying or accounting-related degree and/or relevant experience is an asset.
  • Understanding of construction work sites and ability to document complex information clearly.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead by example and set professional standards.

Responsibilities

  • Create estimates for commercial and light industrial projects using available designs and drawings.
  • Review and develop discipline and multi-discipline material takeoffs (MTO).
  • Review project plans and specifications and coordinate scope with the team.
  • Identify risk issues and their magnitude.
  • Prepare bid instructions, bid forms and solicitation information.
  • Evaluate construction rates, subcontract costs and proposals.
  • Perform productivity analysis of cost estimates and compare scope and quantities.
  • Review designs and specs for cost effectiveness and provide alternatives.
  • Coordinate with sub-trades and suppliers for estimates and data.
  • Answer construction-related questions from sub-trades and suppliers.
  • Prepare preliminary construction schedules.
  • Present the estimate to required parties as needed.
  • Liaise with Business Development to share high-level estimate details.
  • Review completed estimates for continual improvement.
  • Participate in estimate/project handover meetings with Operations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are looking for a Senior Estimator to join our team. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to grow their career, engage in a variety of projects and disciplines, and enjoy autonomy in their work.

The ideal candidate will have a high level of attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication, and experience working for a General Contractor. The ideal individual will also love what they do, be self-motivated and accountable, and be adaptable.

The Senior Estimator will be responsible for estimating a variety of commercial and light industrial projects with a direct contribution to cost management and budgeting for various high-level projects. You will be responsible for gathering all data required for preparing lump sum, unit rate and cost-plus detailed estimates along with conceptual estimating, cost analysis and estimate coordination.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create estimates for commercial and light industrial projects, using whatever designs, drawings, sketches and information that is available
  • Review and develop discipline and multi-discipline material takeoffs (MTO)
  • Review project plans and specifications and coordinate with the team to confirm the complete scope
  • Identify risk issues and their order of magnitude
  • Prepare instructions to bidders, bid form and other bid solicitation information
  • Evaluate and develop construction rates, subcontract cost estimates and proposals
  • Perform productivity analysis of cost estimates; perform comparisons of scope, quantities, and cost data between projects
  • Review designs and specifications for cost effectiveness; provide recommendations for alternativesContact necessary sub-trades and suppliers for estimates; supply required drawings and data
  • Proactively handle construction-related questions from sub-trades and suppliers
  • Complete preliminary construction schedules
  • Present the estimate to the required parties when required
  • Liaise with the Business Development function to ensure they are apprised of the high-level details regarding the estimate
  • Review of completed estimates vs. the estimates for improvement of the accuracy of future estimates
  • Participate in the estimate/project handover meeting with Operations
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in construction and cost estimating
  • Formal education in construction (Diploma/Certificate) is considered an asset
  • Quantity Surveying or accounting-related degree and/or relevant experience would be an asset
  • Understanding of a construction work site is considered an asset. Ability to document and organize complex streams of information (efficiently and accurately with minimal information, strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills)
  • Clearly communicate estimating concepts to various individuals in the organization
  • Understanding of Building Construction from concept to completion
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills (written, oral, interpersonal)
  • Ability to lead by example and set standards of professionalism
  • Proficiency with computers (Microsoft Office, Timberline, MS Project, Insite)
