Job summary

Torn Banner Studios, a Toronto-based game developer, is seeking an Environment Artist to design photorealistic environments for AAA titles. You will work with production to execute the game vision and collaborate with the art team to deliver high-quality assets.

This role supports a flexible work model (remote, hybrid, or on-site) with a focus on delivering immersive environments for PC and console games, while maintaining Ontario residency requirements or relocation.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional game development experience as an Environment Artist.
  • Experience developing AAA titles on PC and/or console.
  • Deep knowledge of environment development processes from sculpting to texturing.

Responsibilities

  • See playable environments through from conception to completion.
  • Produce photorealistic assets with textures and materials applied.
  • Craft realistic levels and environments.
  • Collaborate with level design and other artists to bring concepts to life.
  • Plan, estimate and prioritize time frames for tasks and track progress.
  • Help identify and fix bugs, including performance and budget issues.
  • Incorporate feedback from Directors and Leads into work.
  • Contribute to production workflows and best practices.
  • Participate in brainstorming and concept development sessions.

The Company

Torn Banner Studios is a Toronto, Canada-based independent game development studio founded in 2010. We first made our mark with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, a multi-million copy selling title that redefined melee combat in gaming. Since then, we've continued to grow and innovate, releasing Chivalry 2 and, most recently, No More Room in Hell 2. Today, our team of around 100 developers is dedicated to creating unique, challenging, and fun gaming experiences.

As an Environment Artist you will have a wide range of responsibilities from creating art, communicating with production, facilitating feedback, and working with other team members to execute the vision for the games we make.

Note: While this role can be carried out remotely, candidates are required to be current Ontario residents or willing to relocate to Ontario.

Responsibilities
  • See playable environments through from conception to completion.
  • Produce photorealistic assets, with textures and materials applied
  • Craft realistic levels and environments.
  • Work closely with the level design team and other artists to bring the concepts to life.
  • Plan, estimate and prioritize time frames for the completion of tasks while tracking progress.
  • Help identify and fix bugs, including performance and budget issues.
  • Implement and incorporate feedback from the Director and Leads into work.
  • Work with the team to achieve the desired level of quality and technical accuracy.
  • Help define best practices for our production workflows.
  • Participate in brainstorming and concept development sessions, contributing fresh ideas and innovative approaches.
Requirements
  • An exceptional portfolio of work that exemplifies the creation of high-quality photorealistic environments.
  • 3+ years of professional game development experience as an Environment Artist.
  • Experience developing AAA titles on PC and/or console.
  • Deep knowledge of game environment development processes, from sculpting to retopo, baking, uvs, texturing, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • A high degree of self-motivation and initiative-taking.
  • Experience Unreal Engine 5, Maya, or Blender, Z Brush, and Adobe Substance Suite.
Bonuses
  • Strong technical knowledge working within Unreal Engine 5, including experience with UE5 specific pipelines: Nanite, Lumen, PCG (Procedural Content Generation), Blueprints, etc.
  • Experience working with LMS (Layered Material Systems).
  • Background in traditional art.
  • Concept Art skills.

Compensation
  • The pay range for this role is $105,000 - $135,000 per year. The range for this role represents candidates across a wide range of skills and experience for the position. While we may consider international applicants, this salary is based on an Ontario employee. Therefore offers outside Ontario or outside Canada may differ from the posted amount. Increased salaries may be achievable for those who have achieved mastery and deep industry knowledge over time. Your specific offer will rely on your unique experience and alignment to our team's needs for the position.
