About the Role
This position is responsible for supporting the development and administration of processes that ensure OPTrust’s enterprise data is of high quality and for working with enterprise units to provide them with data. The Senior Enterprise Data Specialist works with and other teams across the organization to develop an understanding of their processes and works with members of the PATH Program in mapping requirements to data processes. The position develops data processes through working with databases, ETL pipelines, data automation, and data delivery. The Senior Enterprise Data Specialist is expected to maintain in-depth knowledge of enterprise data processes and technology and is expected to seek solutions to complex problems independently before escalating issues.
What You’ll Do
Works independently, researches tasks thoroughly, and attempts solutions before escalation:
Maintain strong knowledge of the enterprise processes supported and the technology that supports them; recommend and execute solutions to issues.
Provide expertise and guidance to Data Operations staff to assist in resolving issues.
Contribute to the development of requirements for data processes.
Represent PATH when gathering requirements and during routine interactions with internal clients.
Data Engineering: The primary responsibility is to support PATH leadership in developing systems and processes that warehouse and govern OPTrust’s enterprise data. This includes:
Working with management and stakeholders to identify shortcomings in current data sourcing, loading, storage, and delivery methods, related to cost, efficiency, or internal client needs.
Designing and presenting solutions, including updating or creating database data models, ETL processes, and extractors.
Assisting management in evaluating new datasets and aligning them with OPTrust’s systems and processes.
Implementing solutions independently in a timely manner.
Testing solutions and existing systems as directed.
Documenting data models and processes, ensuring documentation is current.
Helping develop and deliver long-term strategic goals for data architecture.
Creating short-term tactical solutions to support long-term data management roadmaps.
Contributing to metadata management and data quality processes.
Business Analysis: Collaborate with business partners to understand data gaps, create specifications, and deliver solutions, including:
Understanding enterprise functions like HR, Finance, IT, and compliance.
Developing expertise in supporting systems.
Ensuring data management practices are integrated into new initiatives.
Building relationships with stakeholders, vendors, and providing resource support on data issues.
Database Administration: Support data systems maintenance and feature development, including:
Gaining expertise in OPTrust’s data model.
Acting as a contact for vendor engagements.
Creating design specifications and writing SQL queries, data loaders, validators, and exporters.
Resoling operational issues escalated by junior staff.
What You Bring
Post-secondary education in a quantitative, engineering, or computer science field, or demonstrated capability as a Data Engineer/Architect with programming skills.
8+ years of industry experience.
At least 5 years’ experience in Financial Services and Pension domain (preferred).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences.
Expert SQL skills and database administration knowledge.
3+ years’ experience working in an Agile environment, with a solid understanding of SDLC methodologies.
Extensive experience with large-scale data integration projects and data warehousing models.
Experience in creating source-to-target mappings and documentation.
Experience with data quality tools and processes, including profiling, cleansing, and de-duplication using ETL tools.
Experience with version control systems like GitHub or GitLab is a plus.
Supporting reporting teams experience is preferred.
Proficiency in programming languages such as SSIS (preferred), Informatica, Python, with experience in statistical analysis and data transformations.
Hands-on experience with data extraction, cleansing, and modification from sources like files, XML, and databases (Oracle, SQL Server).
Experience with large-scale data migration projects is a plus.
Experience developing APIs and working with BI tools (Power BI preferred) is a plus.
Understanding of standard data models including security masters, reference, and market data.
A client-oriented mindset and ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
Sound judgment and discretion for handling confidential matters.
Excellent communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
