Job summary

UBC is seeking an Engineering Technician 4 to repair and maintain a wide range of laboratory instruments used in the Life Science Institute laboratories. The role emphasizes diagnostic skills, design of specialized equipment, and collaboration with researchers and faculty.

Reporting to the LSI Manager, Operations and Administration, the technician will design, fabricate, repair, and improve lab equipment, ensuring safe operation and high-quality results in teaching and research activities.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a technical college, institute, or recognized apprenticeship is required or preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of related experience in a scientific/research facility or university setting.

Responsibilities

• Designs and fabricates complex devices; adapts equipment for specialized requirements.
• Advises on design, development and modification of research equipment.
• Reviews drawings to determine requirements and feasible solutions.
• Diagnoses faults and proposes alternative methods to fix issues.
• Operates workshop equipment for fabrication and maintenance.
• Trains staff and students in proper equipment use and safety.
