Job summary

Electric Power Engineers is seeking a Principal Power System Engineer to join our Transmission Planning Utilities Team. You will lead generator interconnection and planning studies, provide expert analyses, and mentor staff while collaborating with clients and regulators on grid modernization initiatives.

Based in Canada/US remote-friendly, you will contribute to strategy, develop relationships, and stay ahead with evolving market practices and technologies to shape the grid of the future.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Master’s or PhD preferred).
  • 8–10 years in electric energy, generator modelling, transmission planning and interconnection studies.
  • Solid background in power flow, OPF, transient stability.
  • Knowledge of PSSE, TARA, PSLF, ASPEN, DSATools, PSCAD with hands-on use.
  • Ability to evaluate new utility tariffs and study methodologies.
  • Automation experience (Python, C#, SQL) would be favorable.
  • Strong analytical, communication and tech skills are essential.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly.

Responsibilities

  • Track record delivering generator interconnection or transmission planning projects across ISOs/RTOs or utilities.
  • Provide technical insights in complex initiatives and policy discussions.
  • Lead transmission planning studies including load flow, stability and short circuit analysis.
  • Identify optimal interconnection strategy based on system impacts and capacity.
  • Collaborate with other teams to guide market trends and process changes.
  • Develop relationships with clients, industry bodies, regulators.
  • Stay updated on new technologies and market innovations.
  • Advise on software strategy and IP development.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to project leadership.

EPE is searching for a Principal Power System Engineer to join our growing Transmission Planning Utilities Team. In this role you will work closely with senior leadership to support our growth strategy and provide subject matter expertise. Technical Duties

  • Track record of successfully delivering generator interconnection or transmission planning projects across multiple ISOs/RTOs and/or Utilities
  • Provide technical insights and support in complex initiatives driving policies in the industry
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on transmission planning studies by leading and conducting analyses related to load flow, transient stability and short circuit
  • Passionate about solving difficult technical problems, providing innovative solutions and taking ownership of the solutions provided
  • Identify optimal strategy for project interconnection to the grid based on system impacts and grid capacity
  • Collaborate with other teams within EPE to provide strategic guidance on market trends and process change across multiple ISO’s, ideally in SPP and MISO
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, industry organizations, and regulatory agencies
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, market innovations, and best practices in the energy industry to enhance the organization's offerings and capabilities
  • Advise on technical software strategy and IP development

Leadership Duties

  • Build on EPE's existing generator interconnection and planning studies capabilities and help develop EPE's expansion strategy for the Transmission Planning Utilities team
  • Build confidence with senior and executive management within client organizations and assist in other sales and business development activities
  • Ensure effective project staffing, resource utilization, and staff training/development
  • Ensure that deliverables generated by the Power Systems Engineer(s) assigned to a project is prepared, checked, and approved in accordance with EPE's quality management standards and without errors
  • Take responsibility for the timely completion of assigned projects while meeting all project quality and budget objectives
  • Interact with clients to seek input and address their needs and concerns regarding the project(s) under study
  • Prepare responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) by providing a scope of work and time estimates for new projects
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior team members to build a strong and knowledgeable team
  • Assist in the development of marketing and business development strategies for the organization's energy resources services
  • Participate in industry conferences, seminars, and workshops to stay informed about new developments in the interconnection industry and network with other professionals in the field
Qualifications

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a related field (a Master's or PhD degree is preferred)

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in the electric energy industry, generator modelling, transmission planning and interconnection studies is preferred

  • Solid background in power flow, optimal power flow, transient stability

  • In-depth knowledge of at least one but preferably several of the following software packages: PSSE, TARA, PSLF, ASPEN, DSATools, PSCAD

  • Proven ability to evaluate new utility tariffs and study methodologies
  • Automation experience (Python, C#, SQL) would be looked upon favorably

  • Competency in analytical problem-solving, strong communication, and technology expertise

  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation
