Job summary

BBA Consultants in Canada is seeking a senior engineer in rock mechanics to apply core rock mechanics principles to surface mining, underground mining and civil construction. You’ll provide and manage rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering services and mentor junior professionals.

Travel to project sites across Canada and occasionally overseas is expected; you’ll work with multidisciplinary teams, perform slope stability and deformation analyses, and ensure technical quality of deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering geology, geotechnical, mining or related field.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
  • 10+ years geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Strong rock mechanics background and numerical modelling expertise.
  • Experience with Rocscience and other geotechnical tools.

Responsibilities

  • Apply rock mechanics principles to mining and civil projects.
  • Manage rock mechanics and geotechnical services.
  • Review and supervise geotechnical construction activities.
  • Coordinate site investigations and reporting.
  • Mentor junior technical personnel.

Your future role on our team

As a senior engineer in rock mechanics, you’ll be responsible for applying sound rock mechanic principles to surface mining, underground mining and civil construction.

You’ll provide and manage rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering services as well as task execution. You’ll work with experienced geotechnical professionals who are keen on sharing knowledge for continued development.

  • Apply rock mechanics across a range of activities, including field mapping, geotechnical core logging, rock mass characterization, rock stability assessments and reinforcement design
  • Coordinate and manage geotechnical site investigations, field activities and laboratory materials testing and prepare technical reports
  • Review and supervise civil and geotechnical construction activities
  • Perform terrain and slope hazard assessments, mapping and reporting
  • Carry out geotechnical engineering analyses, including slope stability, seepage and deformation analysis
  • Work with multidisciplinary project teams and ensure the technical quality of deliverables
  • Mentor junior technical personnel
  • Travel to project sites within Canada and occasionally overseas

Summary Of Certifications And Job Requirements
  • Degree in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, mining engineering or other related field; postgraduate degree or relevant mine operations experience is an advantage
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • Over 10 years of relevant professional geotechnical engineering experience
  • Strong academic background and solid understanding of rock mechanics
  • Advanced expertise in numerical modelling, with demonstrated experience using software such as the Rocscience software suite, FLAC3D and other geotechnical analysis tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, technical writing experience and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a team
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites, with valid driver’s licence required
  • Advanced English skills to facilitate collaboration with other BBA offices and/or clients in English-speaking Canadian provinces and internationally; you may need to use English occasionally or daily, depending on current projects
  • Advanced French skills to facilitate collaboration with other BBA offices and/or clients in Québec
  • Asset: background in soil mechanics
