Job description

MSCP Heat Management Solutions is a rapidly evolving organization built as a system of interdependent processes and not as a traditional hierarchy. Estimating, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and field execution operate as a connected entity, each contributing to the overall flow of work.

Our focus is not on maximizing efficiency; we focus on managing our chosen constraints and improving total system throughput. This requires a shared conceptual foundation grounded in systems thinking, Theory of Constraints, and practical application in industrial environments.

Engineering at MSCP does not exist as a standalone function. It exists to enable flow, to ensure that what is designed can be estimated, built, installed, and maintained without friction.

Our work spans different industrial sectors, including oil & gas, where electrical reliability, constructability, and repeatability are critical. Strong theoretical understanding is valued as it leads to clear, executable, and scalable solutions.

The Opportunity

MSCP is seeking a Senior Electrical/Control Engineer to deliver industrial power and control panels and PLC-based automation, and support electric heat tracing (EHT) applications from concept through commissioning. Working with engineering, manufacturing and field teams, you will take technical ownership of assigned projects and mentor junior engineers and designers/students.

This is an opportunity to help shape MSCP's electrical engineering capability: establish practical design standards, improve system reliability, and develop the next generation of engineers while seeing your designs built and commissioned.

Key Responsibilities

Design electrical power and control panels, including single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules and bills of materials. Complete load, conductor, protection, voltage-drop, grounding and equipment-rating calculations and checks.

Support EHT design and integration by coordinating piping, process-temperature, ambient-condition and insulation inputs. Work with experienced EHT specialists or suppliers on heat-loss calculations, heating-cable selection and circuit sizing, and integrate the resulting requirements into power, control and monitoring designs.

Develop control philosophies, functional specifications, operating sequences, I/O lists and cause-and-effect matrices. Select and integrate PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, relays, and communication hardware.

Program, test and document PLC/HMI applications, including permissives, interlocks, alarms, diagnostics, and defined fault responses. Implement appropriate temperature-control strategies and coordinate advanced PID tuning where required.

Integrate PLCs, HMIs, EHT controllers, and supervisory systems. Document network architecture, addressing, signal mapping and communication requirements; configure monitoring, alarms and trends, and troubleshoot data-communication issues.

Prepare and execute factory and site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT), including I/O checks, operating sequences, alarms, and fault responses. Support commissioning, investigate production and field issues, and document root causes and corrective actions.

Coordinate project scope, engineering schedules, budgets, technical risks, suppliers and customer deliverables. Support quotations, procurement, component substitutions and technical change reviews.

Support estimating and proposal development by reviewing technical requirements, identifying design assumptions and risks, developing preliminary architectures and material requirements, and providing engineering input that improves the accuracy and executability of estimates.

Provide practical technical support to panel-shop and field personnel. Review fabrication feedback, vendor documents and installation requirements to improve constructability, serviceability and reliable operation.

Mentor junior electrical engineers, designers and students through drawing, calculation and PLC-code reviews. Explain design decisions, give constructive feedback and progressively assign more complex work within established engineering review and supervision procedures.

Develop reusable drawing templates, PLC function blocks, design checklists and test procedures. Maintain software backups, revision-controlled drawings, calculation packages, test reports, operating instructions and as-built records.

Apply applicable Canadian electrical codes, project specifications, panel-certification requirements and professional-practice procedures. Complete technical reviews and approvals within assigned authority and demonstrated competence.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognized university.

Relevant experience in industrial electrical and control-panel design, PLC/HMI development, and project delivery. Five or more years is preferred; candidates with three to five years who demonstrate the required technical capabilities and mentoring potential will also be considered.

Active P.Eng. registration with APEGA or another Canadian engineering regulator. APEGA registration is preferred; candidates registered elsewhere in Canada must be eligible and willing to obtain APEGA registration as required for the role.

Basic knowledge of electric heat tracing (EHT), including freeze protection and temperature-maintenance applications, heating cables, heat-loss principles, temperature sensing, and associated power, control and monitoring components.

Proficiency in AutoCAD and demonstrated ability to produce complete electrical drawing and calculation packages.

Hands‑on experience developing, testing, commissioning and troubleshooting PLC/HMI applications on at least one major industrial platform, such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens or Schneider Electric.

Practical knowledge of instrumentation, industrial power distribution, grounding and bonding, panel design, and applicable Canadian electrical codes and standards.

Experience integrating industrial devices and troubleshooting communications using protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP or equivalent technologies.

Experience coordinating engineering scope, schedules, suppliers and deliverables, with practical FAT/SAT, commissioning and root‑cause‑analysis skills.

Demonstrated ability to coach less‑experienced engineers, designers, programmers or technicians through technical reviews and practical guidance; formal people‑management experience is not required.

Ability to interpret electrical, piping, instrumentation and mechanical drawings, communicate clearly with customers and shop personnel, and maintain accurate technical documentation.

Assets

Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Automation or a related discipline.

Experience with SOLIDWORKS Electrical and integration of electrical documentation with mechanical designs.

Experience developing EHT design packages, including heat‑loss calculations, heating‑cable selection, circuit sizing and commissioning.

Advanced PID tuning, thermal‑process optimization, SCR‑based power control or specialized EHT design software.

Knowledge of motors, servo systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, valves and actuators.

Experience with remote monitoring, industrial cybersecurity or enterprise data integration.

Experience with hazardous‑location applications, functional safety or listed/certified industrial control panels.

Experience establishing engineering standards, reusable control libraries or structured technical training; project‑management certification.

The role combines office‑based engineering with practical support in panel fabrication, testing, and customer‑site environments in the Edmonton area. Occasional travel and field commissioning may be required. The position reports to the Engineering Manager / designated leader.
