This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Director of Communications based in Canada.

As Senior Director of Communications, you will lead the development and execution of strategic communications initiatives that advance environmental protection and drive meaningful industry transformation. You will shape a distinctive organizational voice, strengthen brand positioning, and create compelling campaigns that influence decision-makers across the paper packaging and fashion supply chains. Working closely with senior leadership, campaign teams, and engagement specialists, you will ensure communications strategies are integrated, impactful, and aligned with broader organizational goals. You will lead a high-performing communications team while overseeing media relations, digital content, external partnerships, and strategic storytelling. Through data-driven evaluation and continuous experimentation, you will refine messaging and maximize campaign effectiveness across international audiences. This is an opportunity to combine visionary leadership, creative communications, and a commitment to systems change in a mission-driven, collaborative environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of the organization's communications strategy, ensuring campaigns support strategic priorities and deliver measurable impact.
  • Strengthen and elevate the organization's brand identity, positioning it as a distinctive and influential voice in transforming paper packaging and fashion supply chains toward next-generation alternatives that protect forests worldwide.
  • Develop compelling narratives and messaging frameworks that resonate with diverse audiences, cut through crowded media environments, and inspire meaningful action.
  • Collaborate closely with campaign and culture and engagement teams to align external communications with broader organizational storytelling, audience engagement strategies, and campaign delivery.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of high-impact communications content across relevant channels, ensuring that materials support campaign objectives, amplify engagement initiatives, and encourage target audiences to take action.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the communications team, including communications strategists and team operations, while providing oversight of media relations, digital communications, and content functions.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture that encourages creativity, professional growth, experimentation, and shared accountability.
  • Provide strategic communications expertise and recommendations to senior leadership and campaign leadership teams, ensuring communications considerations are integrated into planning and execution from the outset.
  • Establish effective cross-functional working practices, including joint planning sessions and regular coordination with engagement teams, to maintain alignment between communications activities and campaign objectives.
  • Manage relationships with external communications agencies, consultants, and partners, ensuring clear briefs, high-quality deliverables, effective performance monitoring, and responsible budget allocation.
  • Oversee communications planning, project management, timelines, resource allocation, and budgets to ensure initiatives are delivered efficiently and within established parameters.
  • Establish evaluation frameworks and performance metrics to assess communications effectiveness, identify lessons learned, and inform future strategic and tactical decisions.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by testing new approaches, refining successful strategies, and amplifying effective communications initiatives.
  • Share insights across communications and engagement functions to ensure audience responses and campaign outcomes inform future storytelling and strategic decisions.
  • Represent the organization and support communications initiatives at international events, building relationships and delivering consistent messaging across global audiences.
Requirements:
  • Significant senior-level experience leading strategic communications, ideally within a mission-driven organization, nonprofit, advocacy group, or campaign-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing communications strategies that strengthen organizational brands, influence public or stakeholder perceptions, and drive meaningful change.
  • Proven ability to create innovative communications campaigns and memorable content that differentiate an organization in a competitive media landscape.
  • Extensive experience managing, mentoring, and developing communications teams, with strong leadership, coaching, and team-building capabilities.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to scope initiatives, establish priorities, manage resources, coordinate stakeholders, and deliver high-profile projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience overseeing external agencies and consultants, including briefing, reviewing deliverables, managing relationships, and evaluating performance.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to translate complex or technical subjects into clear, persuasive, and accessible narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Strong storytelling, brand development, media strategy, and content planning expertise across multiple formats and communications channels.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, influence senior stakeholders, and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience communicating with international audiences and networks, with an understanding of regional differences, cultural nuances, and varied stakeholder expectations.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake approximately five to six international trips annually and experience delivering communications at international events.
  • A collaborative, innovative mindset characterized by openness to new ideas, constructive problem-solving, adaptability, and a positive, solution-oriented approach.
  • A good sense of humour and the ability to maintain perspective, build relationships, and contribute to a supportive team environment.
  • Desirable: Experience in environmental communications, sustainability, forest conservation, or systems-change campaigns.
  • Desirable: Experience working in at least two of the following markets: North America, Europe, China, or India.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with Google Workspace, Canva, Asana, or similar tools for collaboration, content creation, and project management.
Benefits:
