Job Overview

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and results-driven Senior Counsel to join our team.

Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, the Senior Counsel will primarily support OPG’s major projects and strategic initiatives, providing strategic legal advice and support in their areas of expertise. Experience in a large law firm or corporate in-house legal department, especially in the energy industry, is considered an asset.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Provide high-quality and timely legal advice in areas such as corporate/commercial, procurement, capital markets, financial services, project finance, and M&A.
  2. Advise OPG business partners on legal risks, including contractual risks.
  3. Develop and implement legal strategies collaboratively with business partners.
  4. Identify, research, and resolve legal issues independently and as part of a team, offering practical solutions.
  5. Stay informed on OPG’s business and legal matters, including statutory changes and case law.
  6. Continuously learn and expand legal knowledge to support OPG’s goals.
  7. Educate business partners on legal matters relevant to their areas.
  8. Employ effective work practices and manage documentation/files efficiently.
  9. Meet work schedule requirements and proactively pursue new challenges.
  10. Represent OPG with external stakeholders, including government bodies, financial institutions, external counsel, and opposing legal counsel.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum 7 years of legal practice in Ontario
  • Experience in Energy Markets, Labour Relations, or Human Resources is an asset
  • High level of integrity
  • Excellent writing skills for drafting documentation from research, case files, or verbal instructions
  • Ability to provide practical, risk-informed legal advice
  • Results-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail

Additional Information

This position will move to OPG’s new Corporate Headquarters at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario, in Summer 2025. Until then, the role is based temporarily in Toronto, ON.
