Position Overview:
The Senior Commercial Development Underwriter will be expected to manage and grow a portfolio of commercial accounts, while working closely with brokers and internal teams to develop underwriting, growth, and retention strategies in Alberta.
The position also offers opportunities for mentorship and involvement in cross-functional projects designed to refine leadership capabilities, technical knowledge, and product expertise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a book of commercial accounts, assessing risk, determining pricing, and ensuring appropriate coverage terms for property and casualty lines of business.
- Build and maintain relationships with brokers, agents, and key stakeholders to develop new business opportunities and expand existing accounts. Ensure the company’s underwriting guidelines and pricing strategies align with market conditions.
- Monitor and analyze the profitability of your book of business. Make recommendations for policy adjustments, renewals, and opportunities for expansion.
- Participate in cross-departmental initiatives and leadership training programs designed to prepare for future leadership roles. Mentor junior and intermediate underwriters.
- Stay up to date on industry trends, regulations, and company products. Participate in internal training programs to continually refine technical expertise in underwriting and risk management.
- Work closely with claims, actuarial, and technical underwriting to develop underwriting solutions that mitigate exposure and ensure profitability.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Risk Management, Insurance, or related field.
- 5–7 years of experience in underwriting within the Property and Casualty (P&C) insurance industry, with an emphasis on production underwriting.
- Completion of or progress toward professional designations such as CIP is an asset.

- Strong knowledge of P&C products, underwriting guidelines, pricing strategies, and risk analysis.
- Proven ability to analyze risk and make sound decisions based on data and market trends.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build relationships with brokers and internal stakeholders.
- High level of business acumen and understanding of profitability drivers in underwriting.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Detail-oriented with a strong ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Additional Requirements:
- Demonstrated flexibility to travel as required for engagements with broker partners and attendance at industry-related functions.
- Proficiency with underwriting software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant tools.
