Job summary

AXIS Capital in Canada is seeking a Senior Claims Specialist – Professional Lines to manage complex primary and excess claims under professional lines policies, including D&O, FI, E&O, Cyber, Media, Crime and EPL. The role involves collaboration with insureds, brokers, counsel, underwriting partners and claims leadership.

The candidate will have 5–7+ years in claims handling, strong analytical and negotiation skills, and experience with professional lines coverage.

Responsibilities

• Directly handling D&O, FI, E&O, Cyber, Media, Crime, and EPL claims by analyzing coverage and liability.
• Drafting clear coverage positions and settlement rationales for insureds, brokers, and counsel.
• Assessing exposure, establishing reserves, and guiding matters to resolution.
• Participating in mediations and settlement conferences and negotiating outcomes.
• Managing external vendors and legal counsel, with budget and billing oversight.
• Maintaining thorough documentation reflecting rationale for claims decisions.
• Communicating with brokers and insureds about claim activity and trends.
• Mentoring peers and contributing to process improvements.

AXIS is seeking a Senior Claims Specialist – Professional Lines to join our Canada Claims Team. This role involves the direct handling of complex primary and excess claims under our professional lines policies, including D&O, FI, E&O, Cyber, Media, Crime, and EPL policies. The successful candidate will bring strong technical claims expertise, sound judgement, and the ability to navigate complex coverage, liability, damages, and litigation issues. This individual will work closely with insureds, brokers, counsel, underwriting partners, and claims leadership to drive claims toward efficient and appropriate resolution.

This role will be responsible for:

• Directly handling D&O, FI, E&O, Cyber, Media, Crime, and EPL claims by conducting thorough investigations and analyzing and evaluating coverage and liability on first and third-party claims.
• Drafting and communicating clear, well-supported coverage positions and settlement rationales to insureds, brokers, and legal counsel.
• Assessing exposure, establishing appropriate reserves, and strategically guiding litigated and non-litigated matters towards efficient resolution.
• Participating in mediations and settlement conferences, presenting strong, well-reasoned positions and negotiating outcomes that reflect overall exposure,
• Assigning and managing external vendors, including legal counsel, by providing budget and billing oversight, driving litigation strategy, and collaborating with internal Vendor Management teams to enhance cost management efforts.
• Maintaining high standards of documentation, ensuring each file reflects a clear and complete rationale for all claims decisions, including coverage determinations, exposure assessments, reserves and file strategy.
• Maintaining open and professional communication with broker partners and insureds on claim-related activity, and keeping internal stakeholders informed of significant developments, trends, and large loss activity.
• Acting as a technical resource and mentor to peers, contributing to a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
• Contributing to internal initiatives, process enhancements, and training sessions.
• Other duties as assigned

KEY SKILLS & ABILITIES

• 5-7+ years of experience in claims handling, litigation, or related legal/insurance roles, with exposure to specialty lines.
• Demonstrated organizational and technical skills as well as a deep understanding of professional lines coverage and claim resolution strategies.
• In-depth knowledge of claims, litigation, and trial processes as well as excellent analytical, investigative, and negotiating skills.
• Ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels, both internally and externally as well as the ability to identify and resolve complex, disputed claims.
• Commitment to continuous learning and technical development.
• Understanding of and ability to balance both the immediate claim issues as well as the broader portfolio impact and customer service impact of coverage disputes and issues.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with people with conflicting expectations, differing opinions, and multiple viewpoints.
• Post-secondary education in law, insurance, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CIP or Law Degree is considered an asset.
• French language skills are considered an asset.
• Occasional travel and off-site meetings are required.

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of 120,000-155,000K CAD annually. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
