Job summary

National Event Management Inc. is seeking a Senior Bookkeeper / Lead In-House Accountant to lead day-to-day bookkeeping with a heavy AP focus and oversee financial reporting, month-end close, and compliance.

You will work closely with management and our external CPA to optimize processes. The ideal candidate has 5+ years in full-cycle bookkeeping or corporate accounting, strong QuickBooks and Zoho Books skills, and a detail-oriented, autonomous work style.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in full-cycle bookkeeping or corporate accounting.
  • Experience in a Canadian small business environment preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting software (Zoho Books, QuickBooks) and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Accounts Payable process end-to-end, including PO matching and invoice routing.
  • Reconcile bank statements and company credit cards monthly.
  • Prepare working papers and coordinate with external CPA for year-end filings.
  • Manage multi-currency bank accounts and FX gains/losses where applicable.
  • Ensure payroll remittances are accurate and timely.

Job Overview

Due to retirement pending, we are looking for an experienced, autonomous accounting professional to take leadership of our day-to-day bookkeeping operations and serve as our lead internal accountant.

We are seeking a Senior Bookkeeper / Lead In-House Accountant who will manage full-cycle bookkeeping with a heavy focus on Accounts Payable (AP), while also taking the lead on financial reporting, month-end closing, and compliance.

We do have an experienced A/R staff member who works alongside this role, however some AR reconciliation responsibilities could fall under this role.

The ideal candidate is someone who loves the details of day-to-day transaction processing but also possesses the analytical skills to look at the big picture. You will be our lead point of contact for internal accounting, working closely with the management team and our external CPA at year-end, with advice and guidance from an outside consultant who will assist in optimizing processes.

Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable & Transactional Mastery (Daily/Weekly)
  • End-to-End AP: Own the AP process, including matching purchase orders, routing invoices for approval, and scheduling accurate weekly/bi-weekly payment runs (EFT, cheques, and credit cards).
  • Vendor Relations: Act as the primary contact for vendor inquiries, reconcile monthly vendor statements, and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Data Capture: Maintain clean records using digital receipt and invoice capturing tools to ensure a paperless, efficient workflow.
  • Month-End & Year-End Close: Own the trial balance, post necessary accruals, and reconcile bank statements and company credit cards every month.
  • Reconcile the company's multi-currency bank accounts against Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, and Amex settlement activity, monthly and on demand.
  • Reconcile and record multi-currency transactions accurately, including foreign exchange conversion at time of transaction and any resulting gain/loss.
  • Government Compliance: Calculate, prepare, and file quarterly/annual HST/QST returns for both Ontario and Quebec.
  • Payroll & Remittances: Review and manage internal payroll processes and ensure all source deductions are remitted accurately and on time.
  • Financial Reporting: Keep records up to date to ensure cash flow, and P& L Statements are accurate for on-going management review.
  • Year-End Coordination: Prepare working papers and collaborate smoothly with our external CPA for corporate tax filings.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in full-cycle bookkeeping or corporate accounting, ideally within a Canadian small business environment.
  • Software Skills:
  • Proficiency in Zoho Books is highly preferred, but training can be provided for the right candidate.
  • Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks (Desktop or Online) is required, as legacy functions remain in this software.
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Education: College diploma or university degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Location/Commute: Ability to work from our Markham office (Warden &Hwy 7 area) a minimum of 3 days per week, with flexibility to work from home on the remaining days.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, highly organized, and capable of working completely independently with minimal supervision.
