Accommodations Plus International is seeking a Senior Backend Developer in Markham, Ontario. You will build and maintain backend services, APIs, and integrations behind our enterprise-grade applications, writing Java and Spring Boot code daily while leveraging AI tools to design, test, and ship reliable solutions.

You’ll collaborate with a cross-functional team, design data models, and implement secure APIs (REST, SOAP, GraphQL) with strong authentication.

Position Summary

We’re hiring a Senior Backend Developer to build and maintain the services, APIs, and integrations behind our enterprise-grade applications. This is a hands‑on development role: you’ll write Java and Spring Boot code every day, design APIs and data models, and work closely with your Team Lead, frontend developers, and cross‑functional partners to deliver secure, reliable solutions. You’ll also bring strong, practical AI skills, using AI coding assistants and agents every day to design, build, test, and ship. Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot.


• Work hands‑on with AI coding assistants and agents in your daily development, from implementation through testing, code review, and debugging.


• Build and integrate RESTful and SOAP‑based services, including modern authentication (SAML, PingFederate).


• Design data models and write efficient queries across relational and NoSQL databases.


• Build on AWS services such as EC2, S3, SNS, Secrets Manager, and Cognito.


• Write automated unit and integration tests for the functionality you develop.


• Document and test APIs using Postman and Swagger.


• Turn business requirements into clean, secure, and maintainable code.


• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across development, staging, and production.


• Contribute to code reviews, technical design discussions, and team best practices, including how the team uses AI tools.


• Collaborate with your Team Lead, frontend developers, and cross‑functional teams to deliver on commitments.

Required Skills, Education, and Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field


• At least 5 years of experience in backend application development


• Strong, hands‑on use of AI in software development: coding assistants and agents (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor), agentic workflows, and AI‑assisted testing, debugging, and code review. You should be able to demonstrate this live, with real examples of how it has made you more effective


• Good judgment on AI output: knowing when to trust it, how to verify it, and how to keep code quality, security, and maintainability high


• Strong proficiency in Java and the Spring / Spring Boot framework


• Experience designing and building REST, JSON, GraphQL, and SOAP APIs and integrations


• Solid experience with databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and DynamoDB, including data modeling and query performance


• Hands‑on experience with AWS, including EC2, S3, SNS, Secrets Manager, and Cognito


• Experience with authentication and authorization, including protocols such as SAML and PingFederate


• Experience with API design and testing (Postman, Swagger) and testing automation, including automated unit and integration tests


• Experience with Git and CI/CD tools (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions)


• Good communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Node.js.


• Containerization with Docker.


• DevOps tools and automation frameworks such as Ansible.


• Knowledge of monitoring tools such as CloudWatch and Datadog.


• Familiarity with a frontend framework such as Angular or React.


• Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban.


• Experience with legacy‑to‑modern tech migrations.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, during normal core business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Compensation

The good faith compensation range for this role is $125,000 - $135,000 CAD annually. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.

The performance of additional responsibilities if you are designated as a Data Protection Champion (DPC), Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO) or Information Assurance Accounting Officer (IAAO).

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
