Job summary

eBay’s Developer Ecosystem team is seeking a highly experienced Software Design Engineer to design and build scalable APIs and systems that power end-to-end customer experiences. This hands-on technical leader drives architecture, enforces API standards, and partners across functions to deliver high-quality solutions.

You will influence system design, redefine internal API standards (REST, GraphQL), and shape long-term technical strategy while staying deeply involved in implementation.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in the software industry.
• Deep expertise in GraphQL schema composition and evolution, including building user-focused APIs and back-compat at scale.
• Proven ability to design and operate GraphQL APIs in large-scale systems with REST/RPC awareness.
• Strong understanding of multi-threading, concurrency, and distributed systems design.
• Experience driving API design standards, consistency, and governance across teams.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable, resilient full-stack systems supporting core platform capabilities.
• Architect high-traffic, distributed systems across multiple domains.
• Lead the design of robust, intuitive, and evolvable APIs and service contracts.
• Define and enforce standards for API design, documentation, versioning, observability and governance.
• Drive clarity and precision in technical specifications to ensure they are consumable and scalable.
• Write high-quality, maintainable, and performant code, mentoring engineers and leading initiatives end-to-end.
