Job summary

CMHC in Ottawa is seeking a Senior Analyst, Modelling to apply actuarial and financial foresight to housing affordability and to contribute to the development of actuarial and financial knowledge across CMHC's mortgage sector.

This 12‑month contract offers exposure to IFRS 17 valuation, capital adequacy analysis, and collaborative work with cross‑functional teams while maintaining rigorous documentation and quality controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field (Actuarial Sciences, Quantitative Finance, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics).
  • Minimum of three years of modelling experience.
  • Experience in financial industries (banks, insurance, pensions).
  • Knowledge of actuarial valuation methodologies and risk analysis.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on technical work.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
  • Advanced programming knowledge of SAS, R and Python.

Responsibilities

  • Provide deep actuarial expertise including valuation, capital adequacy, projections and analysis.
  • Develop or validate models related to IFRS 17 valuation and contract accounting.
  • Monitor model performance and identify opportunities to improve models and tools.
  • Maintain documentation, controls and maintenance for actuarial models and analyses.
  • Ensure timely model outputs to meet financial reporting requirements.
  • Respond to ad-hoc actuarial requests from stakeholders with clear interpretation.
  • Keep up-to-date on best practices in actuarial methods and regulatory requirements.

About the role

Join the Finance - Insurance and Securitization team, in the Senior Analyst, Modelling position, where we use actuarial and financial foresight to improve housing affordability and serve as a key contributor to the growth of intellectual capital across the business and influence the development of actuarial and financial knowledge of Canada’s mortgage sector.

This is a temporary position of a duration of 12 months.

What you'll do:
  • Providing deep and specialized expertise to CMHC’s actuarial work including but not limited to actuarial valuation, capital adequacy assessment, financial statement projection and analysis.
  • Developing or validating models and processes related to IFRS 17 actuarial valuation and insurance contract accounting.
  • Monitoring model performance to ensure ongoing quality and proactively identifying opportunities to improve existing models and analytical tools.
  • Ensuring appropriate documentation, controls and maintenance for all actuarial models/analysis/processes.
  • Ensuring that model outputs and actuarial analysis are provided in a timely manner to meet corporate financial reporting requirements.
  • Responding to ad-hoc actuarial/finance requests from internal and external stakeholders such as Management Committee members, Board members, OSFI or Department of Finance by developing accurate results, and using strong communication skills to promote understanding of the issue and provide appropriate interpretation and context.
  • Maintaining current knowledge on best practices and recent developments in relevant actuarial/quantitative approaches and techniques through training and professional development activities.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of regulatory requirements in the areas of insurance valuation and other relevant actuarial fields.
What you should have:
  • A bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Actuarial Sciences, Quantitative Finance, Mathematics, Economics, or Statistics.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a modelling role.
  • A demonstrated work experience in a similar role in financial industry including banks, insurance companies, pension funds, etc.
  • An understanding of and demonstrated experience with actuarial valuation methodologies, mathematical finance methodologies and risk analysis.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision on technical and/or analytical work.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Results oriented, accountable for performance, and taking complete ownership of projects.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and best practices with respect to insurance valuation or other actuarial related fields.
  • Advanced programming knowledge of SAS, R and Python.
It would be great if you also had:
  • A professional designation (Actuarial, Chartered Financial Analyst, Professional Risk Manager, Financial Risk Manager, Certificate in Quantitative Finance) considered an asset.
