WSP in Vancouver, BC is seeking a Senior Air Quality Engineer to lead air quality projects, conduct dispersion modelling, and guide clients through regulatory processes across Western Canada.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; P.Eng. registration is preferred.
  • 5+ years of direct air quality experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Expertise in dispersion modelling, emissions inventories, air permitting, EIA, regulatory reporting and monitoring design.
  • Experience applying AERMOD and CALPUFF; ability to interpret model inputs and results.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and data-management skills; proficiency with Excel; GIS/Python/R/LINUX a plus.
  • Experience working with BC and Metro Vancouver regulations; ability to manage projects and mentor staff.

The Opportunity

Build the Future with Us – Join our Environmental Management team as a Senior Air Quality Engineer in our Vancouver, BC office.

Bring your technical expertise and consulting experience to projects that help clients understand and manage air emissions, navigate regulatory requirements and make informed environmental decisions. You'll work with a multidisciplinary team delivering air quality assessments, dispersion modelling, emissions inventories, monitoring programs and permitting services across British Columbia, Yukon and Western Canada.

This role combines hands-on technical work with project management, client engagement and mentoring. You'll take ownership of project delivery, guide developing professionals and contribute to new business opportunities, with support from WSP's regional and national network of specialists

Your Impact

  • Lead and deliver air quality projects for industrial, commercial, infrastructure and public-sector clients, supporting regulatory approvals, environmental impact assessments and special studies.

  • Undertake and guide emissions inventories and dispersion modelling assessments using tools such as AERMOD and CALPUFF, ensuring appropriate methodology, model inputs, assumptions and interpretation of results.

  • Analyze meteorological and ambient air quality data to characterize baseline conditions, assess impacts, and develop practical monitoring and mitigation recommendations.

  • Prepare and review technical reports, air permit applications, regulatory submissions, and air quality monitoring and management plans, coordinating with field specialists to align monitoring programs, data quality objectives and reporting requirements.

  • Manage projects from proposal through closeout, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, resource coordination, progress reporting, invoicing, financial performance, and proactive management of scope, budget or schedule changes.

  • Provide technical guidance, peer review and QA/QC oversight, supporting defensible assessments, clear documentation and consistent technical excellence.

  • Build and maintain client relationships by understanding client priorities and providing practical advice that supports operational, regulatory and environmental objectives.

  • Contribute to business development and lead proposal preparation by identifying opportunities, developing technical approaches, and estimating project effort and resource requirements.

  • Mentor junior and intermediate team members while collaborating across WSP’s technical teams to support knowledge sharing, technical development, and improved modelling, reporting and review processes.

  • Uphold WSP’s safety culture and Life Saving Rules, including during occasional site visits, client meetings and field program support.

The Skills That Set You Apart

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical, environmental engineering, or a related engineering discipline; a relevant graduate degree is an asset.

  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

  • 5+ years of directly relevant air quality experience, with increasing responsibility for technical assessments, project delivery and client interaction; environmental consulting experience is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in air quality consulting, including dispersion modelling, emissions inventories, air permitting, environmental impact assessment, regulatory reporting, and monitoring program design and interpretation.

  • Practical experience applying AERMOD and/or CALPUFF, including preparing or reviewing model inputs, evaluating results, and communicating assessment implications and limitations.

  • Experience interpreting and applying air quality regulations, assessment guidelines and permitting requirements; direct experience with British Columbia and Metro Vancouver requirements is a strong asset.

  • Proven ability to manage projects or major technical work packages, coordinate contributors, and deliver high-quality work within budget and schedule constraints.

  • Strong technical writing, communication, analytical and data-management skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel; experience with GIS, Python, R, Linux, or similar analytical tools is an asset.

  • Experience developing client relationships, contributing to proposals and business development, and mentoring developing professionals through technical review, coaching and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

  • Demonstrated initiative, sound professional judgment, attention to detail, and a practical approach to solving technical challenges, managing competing priorities, and supporting occasional travel for project meetings and site visits.

Compensation

  • AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $122,900 to $162,800
  • MB & ON: $112,100,100 to $154,400
  • NB, NL, NS, PEI & QC:$111,000 to $147,400
