Job summary

WestJet is seeking a Senior Advisor Health Programs to support the health, safety, and operational readiness of employees and guests. The role blends clinical judgment with disability management and program coordination across medical, regulatory, and operational contexts.

The successful candidate will lead Fitness-to-Fly evaluations, advise on passenger medical considerations, and partner with HR, Safety, and Operations to advance in-flight health readiness and workplace health initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with active provincial registration in Canada.
  • Certification in Occupational Health Nursing (COHN/COHN-C) or equivalent is an asset.
  • Additional training in disability management or occupational health is preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in occupational health.
  • Experience supporting disability management and workplace accommodation processes.
  • Familiarity with Canadian occupational health regulations and workers’ compensation systems.
  • Experience in aviation, transportation, or safety-sensitive environments is an asset.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and tact in confidential issues.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Remain calm in stressful situations and manage complex tasks under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Fitness-to-Fly evaluations and provide clinical guidance on passenger medical conditions and travel readiness.
  • Review and improve the Fitness-to-Fly process to align with aviation regulations and standards.
  • Provide clinical consultation to operational teams regarding passenger medical considerations and risk mitigation.
  • Maintain onboard medical kits in line with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Collaborate with safety, operational, and regulatory teams on medical preparedness for in-flight events.
  • Develop guidelines, procedures and educational materials related to passenger health and medical travel.
  • Manage disability cases including STD, LTD, and WCB/Provincial boards with return-to-work plans.
  • Coordinate workplace accommodations and modified duties with medical recommendations.

Position Overview

The Senior Advisor Health Programs supports the health, safety, and operational readiness of employees and guests. This role provides clinical expertise across Guest Health (Fitness-to-Fly and onboard medical preparedness) and Employee Health (disability management, return to work, accommodations, and fitness-for-duty).

The successful candidate will apply strong clinical judgment, disability management experience, and program coordination skills to navigate complex medical, operational, and regulatory cases. Excellent communication, decision making, attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders are essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct guests Fitness-to-Fly evaluations and provide clinical guidance regarding passenger medical conditions and travel readiness.
  • Support the review and continuous improvement of the Fitness-to-Fly process, ensuring alignment with aviation regulations, industry standards, and evolving clinical guidance.
  • Provide clinical consultation to operational teams regarding passenger medical considerations and risk mitigation.
  • Participate in the review and maintenance of onboard medical kits, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with aviation and emergency medical best practices.
  • Collaborate with safety, operational, and regulatory teams to support medical preparedness for in-flight health events.
  • Contribute to the development of guidelines, procedures, and educational materials related to passenger health and medical travel considerations.
  • Manage and provide clinical insights for disability management cases, including Short-Term Disability (STD), Long-Term Disability (LTD), and Workers’ Compensation (WCB/Provincial boards), by reviewing medical documentation, assessing functional abilities, and supporting safe and timely return-to-work planning.
  • Participate in the evaluation and coordination of workplace accommodations and modified duties, ensuring alignment with medical recommendations and operational requirements.
  • Conduct or support Fitness-for-Duty assessments to determine an employee’s ability to safely perform safety sensitive duties.
  • Provide clinical guidance to leaders and HR partners regarding employee health concerns affecting workplace performance or safety.
  • Participate in file reviews to support complex cases and provide insights to guide next steps.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of integrated occupational health and wellness services, combining direct clinical care (e.g., assessments, health surveillance, case management) with workplace heath initiatives to reduce organizational health risks.
  • Support public health initiatives including communicable disease prevention, surveillance, and response and ensure alignment with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records in accordance with privacy legislation and professional nursing standards.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of documentation standards and program metrics.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders including Human Resources, Safety, and Operations.
  • Contribute to ad hoc projects/tasks aimed at improving, developing, and implementing health-related initiatives as needed.
