Job description

ML6 is partnering with a diversified organization with business interests spanning real estate, residential and commercial property management, construction and natural resources to identify a Senior Accountant/Assistant Controller to fill a 12-15 month maternity leave contract.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this individual will play an important role in supporting the organization's accounting operations across multiple business entities. The position will have broad exposure to general accounting, financial reporting, property accounting and construction project accounting, with responsibility for ensuring financial information is accurate, reconciled and delivered on time.

The successful candidate will be a hands‑on accounting professional who is comfortable managing day‑to‑day accounting activities while also supporting month‑end and year‑end processes, financial analysis, budgeting and audit preparation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a diverse operating environment and collaborating with finance, property management and project teams.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, general ledger reviews, reconciliations and preparation of financial statements.
  • Maintain accurate financial records across multiple entities, investigating discrepancies, resolving outstanding balances and ensuring transactions are properly supported and recorded.
  • Oversee accounting activities related to residential and commercial properties, including tenant billing, rent collections, common area maintenance (CAM) recoveries, property taxes, utilities and other operating expenses.
  • Reconcile tenant accounts, prepare operating cost adjustments and statements, process vendor invoices and payment runs, and support accounts receivable collections.
  • Provide accounting support across construction and development projects, including job-cost tracking, progress billing, holdbacks, capital expenditures and project cost reconciliations.
  • Prepare budget-to-actual reporting, investigate variances and provide financial insights to property management and operational leadership to support business decisions.
  • Prepare working papers and supporting documentation for external audits, assist with GST filings and reconciliations, and ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and internal controls.
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules, record depreciation and amortization, assist with banking activities, cash management and loan reconciliations.
  • Maintain accurate financial information across accounting and property management platforms while identifying opportunities to improve reporting, internal controls and accounting processes.
  • Support the implementation of new property management and financial reporting systems, along with additional financial analysis and reporting initiatives as required.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful:
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting or Finance. A CPA designation or progress toward a CPA is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in general ledger accounting, financial reporting, month-end close and account reconciliations.
  • Experience within commercial or residential real estate, property management, construction or project-based environments is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian accounting practices, with familiarity with ASPE considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting financial statement preparation, external audits, budgeting and variance analysis.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, formulas and financial reporting schedules.
  • Exposure to accounting and property management platforms such as Yardi, NetSuite or Sage.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to investigate discrepancies and resolve accounting issues independently.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines across different business entities.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with finance, property management and operational teams.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach with a strong sense of ownership, accountability and discretion when handling confidential financial information.
