The Security Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Manager (Security) in the coordination of all security operations, as well as managing, training, and performance of security personnel while being at the forefront of providing exceptional security services. The Security Coordinator will play an integral role in maintaining the overall security and protection of Heritage Park in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures, and SSIA Act requirements.

Who We Are:

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

Under the direction of the Manager, Protection Services, the Security Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the coordination of Security Operations, as well as assisting in the hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, compliance, and performance management of all Security personnel. This role plays an integral part in efficiently and effectively maintaining the overall security and protection of the facility, ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and procedures including emergency response, public safety, and fire prevention protocols along with Park Events and special functions.

Responsibilities:

Operations Coordination

Office Assistance

  • Conduct daily patrols of the Park, documenting findings such as improperly locked buildings, safety hazards, mechanical issues, and damage when required.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to visitors, addressing inquiries and providing information in a timely manner.
  • Control vehicle access to the Park, ensuring that authorized vehicles enter and leave within designated times. Record and report entry/exit information.
  • Collaborate with event coordinators to ensure appropriate security measures are in place for special events. Monitor guest entry/exit during special events, assisting with barricade setup in coordination with grounds maintenance.
  • Record and track lost and found items, make efforts to contact owners, and ensure proper accounting of all items.
  • Respond to incidents, complete required reports, and assist in investigations to ensure accurate documentation and resolution of incidents.
  • Respond promptly to alarm activations and follow emergency procedures in line with Heritage Park's protocols.
  • Preserve order and may act to enforce regulations and directives for the facility, pertaining to all staff, volunteers, visitors, and property.

Administration

  • Collaborate with management to plan and control the security department budget, ensuring expenditures remain within allocated limits.
  • Act as an assistant administrator of all security & safety software programs including programming (Genea, Eagle Eye, Corfix, etc.) and maintenance.
  • Administer the upper lot parking program and assist in administering the Calgary Parking Authority contract.
  • Administer the Park Radio Program in monitoring the use and maintenance of park radios, issuing and collecting radios and keys from staff as required, ensuring all equipment is functional and accounted for at the end of each day.
  • Administer the lost and found program.
  • Assist with absence management, scheduling, and timesheet approvals.
  • Coordinate and oversee fire drills for camps, ensuring all staff and volunteers are trained and prepared for emergency evacuation procedures, working closely with the Security Manager and HSE Manager to ensure drills are conducted regularly and in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Review detailed security reports for each shift and compile the weekly issues report and assist with compilation of all other required Senior Management and Board Reports.
  • Assist in coordination of Heritage Park key program including creating keys and cores, monitoring access control, assigning new key sets, building new key sets, and coordinating repairs.
  • Assist in building the Special Events operations plans in coordination with all other Park departments.
  • Assist with coordination of all documentation and investigations for incident reporting including collaboration with other departments for provincial submissions.
  • Assist the Security Manager with film production coordination on the park, ensuring Park film protocols are followed and the production runs smoothly.

Emergency Response

  • Act as the “Incident Commander” in the absence of the COO and Security Manager as per the ERP guidelines for the Park.
  • Act as the Security Manager, assuming responsibilities in their absence as the second in command to the team including the ERP designation assigned to the Security Manager.
  • Serve as one of the Assistant Fire Wardens for the entire facility, supporting fire safety protocols, assisting Calgary Fire Department in annual inspections, and assisting with emergency response procedures.

People Leadership

  • Responsible for overall training of Security Department Staff and assists with the development and implementation of all Standard Operating Procedure manuals for Security. Work closely with Human Resources to ensure compliance with security staffing needs, training, and scheduling.
  • Lead by example by providing day-to-day support to casual team members, enhancing their expertise and supporting their professional growth. Foster a collaborative working environment by clearly communicating expectations, delegating tasks to staff, and recognizing their contributions.
  • Mentor and support the security team in their professional development, offering guidance and opportunities for growth within the organization.
  • Manage daily security team workloads and delegate tasks and responsibilities as needed, ensuring tasks are completed effectively and in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with the Security Manager to establish performance management strategies, key performance indicators (KPIs), and assist in monitoring the performance of staff to ensure programs meet high standards of quality and effectiveness. In partnership with the Security Manager, create annual SMART goals and ensure regular communication to track progress and ensure on-time delivery and completion of goals.
  • Assist in the recruitment and onboarding processes for the security team.
  • Ensure staff adhere to procedures and make recommendations for performance improvements where applicable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of secondary school education is required; Post-Secondary Education in a related field would be an asset.
  • Possession of a valid security license is a requirement; continuation of licensing is a required condition of ongoing employment.
  • 4 years prior experience in informal supervisory or team lead roles as well as office administration experience is required; 2 years of formal supervisory experience in Security is preferred.
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with level C CPR is required; BLS is preferred.
  • Valid Alberta Driver’s License with a clean driving record (abstract required).
  • Strong demonstrated customer service skills is required. People-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and tact. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting.
  • Knowledge in lock repair and key creation, with practical experience in maintenance and troubleshooting is an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), with the ability to efficiently use these tools for daily tasks.
  • Strong supervisory, leadership, organizational, and communication skills with a strong ability to follow and lead standard procedures and routines.
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through an additional Police Information Check as a condition of employment.

Special Clothing and Equipment:

  • Appropriate security officer uniform will be issued by Heritage Park. Washing and maintaining uniforms in a presentable fashion will be the employees' responsibility.
  • Heritage Park provides footwear allowance as per the Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 37.
  • Individuals will be required to supply their own appropriate outdoor weather protective clothing (gloves, toques, hats) it must be black or navy blue in colour and without visible logos.

Special Working Conditions:

  • The position works both indoors/outdoors and is exposed to weather extremes, with most work taking place outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions including conditions of darkness.
  • These positions will require the incumbents to engage in physical activities such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time.

Hours of Work:

  • The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week;
  • The schedule will generally be five consecutive days per week (Monday to Friday); but will be modified to meet the organization's operational requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts and days of the week including weekends, holidays, or extended hours due to events may be required.
