Base pay range

CA$17.20/hr - CA$17.20/hr

Branch: Learning & Engagement Programs
Rate of Pay: $17.20 per hour
Duration: Approx. May-September 2025 (Non-Permanent)
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Position Purpose

The Seasonal Zoo Camp Counsellor is responsible for leading Zoo Camp, an educational day camp held in weekly sessions for children ages 4-16. Through various topics for different age groups, we aim to provide fun activities and nature-related engagement while maintaining educational value in a positive environment. This position will support the implementation of the Strategic Plan.

Core Role Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver Zoo Camp programming based on weekly themes under the guidance of the Learning & Engagement Coordinator.
  • Create a memorable and fun camp experience through positive interactions, including zoo tours, behind-the-scenes visits, singing, activities, crafts, and nature exploration.
  • Ensure camper safety and wellbeing, adhering to Toronto Zoo policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with parents alongside Group Leaders/ Supervisors to ensure a positive experience for each child.
  • Complete reports, paperwork, and administrative duties, sharing information with relevant staff.
  • Share conservation messages engagingly, using interpretive methods.
  • Promote sustainability awareness and actions.
  • Follow health & safety protocols, recognizing and reporting hazards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area to exceed customer expectations and ensure safety guidelines are met.
  • Follow all policies and instructions from the branch.
  • Attend necessary training sessions.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
  • Must be enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, post-secondary education in education, biology, or related experience.
  • Experience working with children in a camp setting.
  • Experience leading educational programs is preferred.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Knowledge of animal, plant, and conservation issues.
  • Interpretive teaching experience is an asset.
  • Commitment to sustainable practices.
  • Familiarity with the Zoo and exhibits is preferred.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification required.
  • Ensure all licenses and certificates are valid; provide copies upon hire and renewal.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS is an asset.
  • Proficiency with computerized programs and systems.
  • Ability to work weekends, shifts, and holidays.
  • Courteous and efficient interaction with staff and the public.
  • Physical ability to meet job requirements.
  • Effective communication in English, both written and verbal.
