Job summary

University of Victoria's Faculty of Science Machine Shop is seeking a skilled machinist to maintain and repair teaching and research lab equipment. The role involves designing and fabricating custom equipment from verbal descriptions, samples, or drawings, and testing for performance and safety.

You will operate a range of machines including milling, welding, sheet metal and woodworking tools, and supervise both graduate and undergraduate students, while coordinating with faculty and researchers

Qualifications

• Fully trained machinist with journeyman level.
• Experience with welding, sheet metal, plastic fabrication, and wood working is a plus.
• Strong communication skills and ability to guide students and staff.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks and Mastercam.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair teaching and research lab equipment.
• Design and fabricate custom equipment from verbal, samples, or drawings.
• Test finished products for performance and safety.
• Operate machining, welding, sheet metal, and woodworking tasks.
• Supervise and assist students and other shop users.
• Liaise with faculty, staff, researchers and students across the university.
