SSE Operations Staff in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Schulich Studio Technician for approximately 8 months.

This position reports to the Manager, Schulich Studios at the Schulich School of Engineering, and will facilitate Schulich Studio experiential learning and laboratory sessions. The goal of this position is to support advancing experiential learning with a specific focus on first-year common core course.

There are peak periods of workflow at the start of each semester (September, January, May, July). Work hours are typically weekdays are course dependant from 8:30am to 4:30pm. However, shift hours between 8am -6pm may be required2-3 days/week to support SSE events and Schulich Studio session supports. There may be occasional times where work is required outside of regular hours to support live Schulich School of Engineering specific events and other teaching and learning initiatives. This position is on-campus and not suitable for a remote work schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Schulich Studio Technical Support

• Facilitate the experiential learning components of one specific first-year common core course each semester (ENGG 200; ENGG 202; ENGG 204; ENGG 212; ENGG 225 or ENDG 233) working with the Education Manager and Course Coordinator during the Schulich Studio laboratory session.
• Updates to laboratory worksheets provided by Academic Faculty Course Coordinator.
• Assessing feasibility, troubleshooting, and executing the design for the experiential learning laboratory components as directed by the academic faculty member.
• Creating a standard operating procedure for the lab to be reviewed by the Course Coordinator (faculty), including ensuring that inventory is available, and lab kits are created in non-teaching time periods.
• Maintenance and inventory of laboratory equipment for the respective course, including scheduling any required maintenance during non-instructional time periods to ensure a clean and safe environment for students or alerting the Education Manager for hazards.
• Coordinating the necessary inventory for the lab, testing, and maintaining lab equipment, and maintaining the rooms/space functionality.
• Facilitate in-class / in-lab support for active learning sessions in the Schulich Studio which will match the class schedule.
• Collaborate with technical services and Tech Manager, to support necessary equipment maintenance for classes.
• Specialized knowledge to demonstrate laboratory functionality of technical equipment in classrooms and demonstrate labs.
• Provide updates about what needs to be repaired or replaced, for classrooms to remain functional for teaching.

Collaborate with Technical Team to Support Labs

• Support the First-Year Academic Faculty with the planning and practicality of new experiments in laboratories and undergraduate projects for first-year courses.
• Maintain efficient, safe, well-organized laboratories and projects for students both before & after laboratory sessions. Major updates completed during spring/summer when fewer classes are scheduled.
• Ordering and inventory of laboratory materials and supplies required for the laboratory sessions, budget approved by the Education Manager.
• Configure, maintain, and operate specialized area equipment including testing systems and instruments; laboratory apparatus; and associated infrastructure including: computer operations, electronics, data acquisition systems, computer control for laboratory systems.
• Ensure compliance with safety, fire, and health regulations in the laboratories.
• Maintain and update laboratory hazard assessments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manuals on a regular basis.
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Engineering Undergraduate (in any discipline) degree is required.
• Proven technical experience with supporting a teaching & learning environment.
• Passion for experiential learning is required.
• First Aid certification.
• Strong working knowledge of various operating systems, multimedia programs, productivity software, communication tools and networking concepts.
• Highly self-motivated and self-managed.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including instructional, facilitation, and presentation skills.
• Strong analytical, problem solving and scheduling abilities, and the ability to lead implementing solutions using the innovative application of technologies and platforms in SSE.
• Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a rapidly changing work environment.
• A positive student-centered focused approach, creating student resources to support the Schulich Studio approach to active learning.
• Aptitude and ability to operate appropriate area tools and equipment as required.

Considered an Asset:

• Master's degree in engineering (in any discipline)
• Previous experience as a laboratory technician in a post-secondary environment.
