Job summary

The University of Calgary is seeking a Full-time Staff Limited Term General Maintenance Worker to support the Operations & Maintenance team for approximately one year. The role involves carpentry, roofing, flooring, painting, minor plumbing, electrical re-lamping, and general maintenance tasks across campus facilities.

Overtime, standby, and occasional shifts may be required. The position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance.

Qualifications

• Non-certified general facility maintenance experience would be an asset.
• Physical strength and stamina and be able to lift up to 25 kilograms.
• Ability to perform physical activities requiring use of arms and legs (climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping).

Description

The Maintenance-Life Safety Team within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Staff Limited Term General Maintenance Worker for approximately 1 year.

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) department, as a part of Facilities Management & Development, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities. Campus is divided into 6 operating zones.

This position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance. Work is performed under minimal supervision.

This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday to Friday, however, transfer to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on standby. Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies.

This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 meters, heavy lifting, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments. The position might require working in close proximity to and possible contact with many species of animals. Opportunities may include future training programs including apprenticeships.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of this position is supporting the Operations & Maintenance department in completing daily operations and maintenance coverage for systems and general facility maintenance. The successful candidates will be expected to assist trades personnel as part of their duties which do not require certification including, but not limited to carpentry, roofing, flooring, tile setting, door hardware, painting, minor plumbing, electrical re-lamping and general maintenance work.

After a suitable training period, successful candidates will also be expected to work independently on various assignments relating to the trades, custodial, and grounds duties, including, but not limited to: carpentry, roofing, flooring, tile setting, door hardware, painting, minor plumbing, and general maintenance work.

Position is also required to participate in disaster planning and mock disaster exercises and attendance at department safety meetings.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

• Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.
• Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University.
• Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order.
• Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
• Provide customer service to internal according to university and departmental standards and expectations by pleasantly and respectfully interacting with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community as well as evaluating customer satisfaction.
• Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.
• Discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail are required attributes.
• Is expected to actively participate in own training and development in coordination with the department, and is willing to learn and adapt to change.
• Meets all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures and OHS Legislation as required; ensuring personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations.
• Is familiar with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" and conducts himself/herself according to these Principles in all situations when acting on behalf of the University of Calgary.
• Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.
• Ensures that personal hygiene, attire and grooming are appropriate for the work environment

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Non-certified general facility maintenance experience would be an asset.
• Physical strength and stamina and be able to lift up heavy (up to 25 kilograms).
• Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.
• Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time as well as be able to work in cramped positions
• Mechanical aptitude and proven ability to use hand and power tools, to work on ladders at various heights, and demonstrate a safety-conscious attitude.
• Ability and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc
• Proven record of being able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner and have ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.
• Comfortable working with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers.
• Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
• Excellent customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices.
• Opportunities may include future training programs including apprenticeships.
• Must hold a valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
