Job summary

Ottawa Safety Council is seeking School Crossing Guards for the 2026–2027 school year to help protect children at designated crossings during peak hours. Assignments are near your home across Ottawa, and you may be a student 16+ or other community member looking to contribute.

Shifts range from 40 minutes to 2 hours; availability for at least 5 shifts per week, Monday to Friday, with up to two shifts per day; guards are paid per shift; training and equipment are provided.

Qualifications

Position Overview

The Ottawa Safety Council (OSC) is seeking dedicated and community‑minded individuals to join our team as School Crossing Guards for the 2026–2027 school year. In this vital role, you will help ensure the safety of children and other pedestrians at designated school crossings during peak school hours. Whether you're a student (16+), stay‑at‑home parent, retiree, or simply someone who wants to make a difference in your community, we welcome applicants from all walks of life. Please note that this is an existing, recently vacant position.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Direct or escort pedestrians across the street, stopping traffic as necessary.
• Maintain focus and avoid disruptions while escorting students and pedestrians across the street.
• Communicate traffic, crossing rules, and other information to students and adults.
• Report unsafe student behaviour to school officials.
• Inspect your intersection daily and report any unsafe conditions to the Ottawa Safety Council and/or the City of Ottawa.
• Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross.
• Be aware of emergency vehicles approaching the area and ensure that they have priority over vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Record license plates of dangerous motorists and report to appropriate officials.
• Comply with all safety requirements and wear all required equipment (provided).
• Always maintain a calm and professional demeanor.
• Maintain a visible and professional presence at your assigned crossing.

Shifts and Hours

Shifts range from 40 minutes to 2 hours. School Crossing Guards must be available for at least 5 shifts per week, Monday to Friday, with up to 2 shifts per day—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—for a total of 10 possible shifts weekly. Operational School Year (August to June). School Crossing Guards are paid per shift.

Position Requirements

• Smart Phone with access to a data plan is mandatory.
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a vehicle is an asset.
• Valid Standard First Aid with CPR C certification is an asset.
• Availability to work Monday to Friday (all AM and/or PM shifts).
• Police Records Check (PRC) with the Vulnerable Sector – PRC can be completed during the application process. Costs associated with the PRC will be reimbursed by the OSC after three (3) months of employment. Employment offer is conditional upon review of a valid PRC.
• Effective communication (verbal and listening) skills in English.
• Ability to interact and cooperate with people of diverse ages, identities, and backgrounds.
• Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to a work schedule.
• Confirmation of physical health from a licensed physician may be required. Reference to full manual dexterity and multi‑limbed coordination essential. Due to the requirements of the position, accommodations due to health may be limited.

Working Conditions And Physical Capacity Requirements

• Ability to walk briskly, move repeatedly in and out of the intersection, and stand for up to 2 hours.
• Stand and maintain alertness for the entirety of scheduled shifts.
• Ability to hold a 5‑lb Stop Sign Paddle above shoulder height for extended periods of time.
• 20/20 Vision (with or without corrective lenses) along with adequate depth and peripheral perception
• Accountable to work in all environmental conditions. Environmental conditions may include but are not limited to snowstorms, freezing rain, cold temperatures, rain, heat waves, humidity, hot temperatures, and dust, etc.
• Ability to dress appropriately for and perform moderate physical labour during all weather conditions.
• Hazards associated with high traffic conditions.
