Job summary

Halifax Regional Centre for Education is seeking a Cafeteria Worker to support the school community with food preparation and service in line with the School Food and Nutrition Policy. You will interact daily with students and pre-primary children, promoting healthy eating and food equity while maintaining dignity, respect, and confidentiality.

Responsibilities include preparing and serving meals, logging daily records, ordering supplies, ensuring food safety, and supporting recycling programs.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma required or equivalent.
• Basic Food Safety Training is required and can be provided during training.
• Experience in food service or related training is preferred.
• Understanding of food allergies and related conditions.
• Physical ability to perform duties including lifting up to 50 lb.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and responsiveness to diverse student backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Complete daily logs (temperature, cleaning, food prepared/consumed/composted).
• Place food orders with vendors when requested.
• Interact positively with students in the lunch line without comments on foods chosen.
• Ensure food safety standards are followed at all times.
• Prepare and serve food.
• Perform kitchen duties (wash dishes, collect/remove compost, recyclables, garbage, clean and restock).
• Serve students quickly and politely.
• Promote positive relationships and communication within the school environment.
• Adhere to the School Food and Nutrition Policy and lunch program standards.
• Support the school recycling program.
• Delivery positions only: deliver cafeteria orders to neighboring schools.
