Scenic Painter - Theatre Practitioner Level 2 or 3

This is a term position from July 2 - 25, 2025.

The Opportunity

Banff Centre is looking for a Scenic Painter who can work collaboratively to provide artistic support for this summer's Opera performances.

Specific Accountabilities

Reporting to the Production Manager, Performing Arts, some key responsibilities include:

  1. Assist with creating visual elements for theatre and opera performances.
  2. Painting backdrops, murals, and props in collaboration with artistic directors.
  3. Work closely with set designers to ensure that painted elements match the vision for the production, understanding the color schemes, texture needs, and overall visual direction.
  4. Use a variety of brushes and techniques to achieve desired effects.
  5. Once a production is underway, maintain painted sets, touching up areas that have been damaged when moved or from use.
Qualification and Educational Requirements
  1. Theatre Practitioner level 2: must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
  2. Theatre practitioner level 3: must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
  3. Has completed a formal theatre education.
  4. Must have a working knowledge of the theories and practices that support this discipline.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  6. Able to work with tight, changing timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  7. Knowledgeable of related industry trends including the application of up-to-date techniques, and use of special materials and current health and safety standards.
  8. Able to apply professional theatre techniques and methods to provide the quality, efficiency and support level required by Performing Arts.
Special Requirements
  1. Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.
Employment Terms & Benefits
  1. In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500-hour probationary period.
  2. Theatre Practitioner Level 2: this position pays between $22.59 and $25.85 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  3. Theatre Practitioner Level 3: this position pays between $27.17 and $31.51 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  4. This is a term position, from July 2 - 25, 2025.
