Scenic Painter - Theatre Practitioner Level 2 or 3

This is a term position from July 2 - 25, 2025.

Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity aims to inspire everyone who attends our campus – artists, leaders, and thinkers – to unleash their creative potential.

The Opportunity

Banff Centre is looking for a Scenic Painter who can work collaboratively to provide artistic support for this summer's Opera performances.

Specific Accountabilities

Reporting to the Production Manager, Performing Arts, some key responsibilities include:

  • Assist with creating visual elements for theatre and opera performances.
  • Painting backdrops, murals, and props in collaboration with artistic directors.
  • Work closely with set designers to ensure that painted elements match the vision for the production, understanding the color schemes, texture needs, and overall visual direction.
  • Use a variety of brushes and techniques to achieve desired effects.
  • Once a production is underway, maintain painted sets, touching up areas that have been damaged when moved or from use.
Qualification and Educational Requirements
  • Theatre Practitioner level 2: must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
  • Theatre practitioner level 3: must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
  • Has completed a formal theatre education.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the theories and practices that support this discipline.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Able to work with tight, changing timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledgeable of related industry trends including the application of up-to-date techniques, and use of special materials and current health and safety standards.
  • Able to apply professional theatre techniques and methods to provide the quality, efficiency, and support level required by Performing Arts.
Special Requirements
  • Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.
Employment Terms & Benefits
  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500-hour probationary period.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 2: this position pays between $22.59 and $25.85 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 3: this position pays between $27.17 and $31.51 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • This is a term position, from July 2 - 25, 2025.
