Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an experienced Health and Safety Coordinator to support the implementation of health, safety, security, and environmental strategies for large-scale infrastructure projects, including the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (IIWWTP). This role sits within our Program Management team and collaborates closely with our project management and construction administration leads to uphold best-in-class safety standards. This position will be based out of our Markham, Ontario office, with assignments on-site at major infrastructure project locations. You will play a key role in integrating and monitoring the implementation of safety policies and frameworks, supporting a culture of continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with all applicable safety legislation and standards. We’re looking for a dedicated professional to help grow and support a team of high-performing individuals who are committed to building essential public infrastructure while prioritizing health, safety, and wellbeing.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support project teams in applying the IIWWTP HSSE Framework across all associated workstreams.

  • Act as the primary contact for health and safety inquiries related to site operations and infrastructure project delivery.

  • Collaborate with the client to support Occupational Safety, Health & Wellbeing (OSHW) strategies and ensure consistent implementation.

  • Conduct focused functional assurance reviews to validate consistent application of safety best practices across the site.

  • Lead the rollout of transformative OSHW initiatives and ensure adoption with partner organizations and teams.

  • Maintain and update the Health, Safety & Security (HSS) Framework and guide implementation of required processes.

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project safety documentation and training records.

  • Coordinate and track safety training requirements for project team members.

  • Conduct safety audits and inspections to assess compliance with OH&S regulations and site-specific requirements.

  • Investigate near-miss events and incidents; document root causes and assign corrective and preventative actions (CAPA).

  • Track CAPAs to ensure they are completed on time and are effective in addressing safety concerns.

  • Review and provide input on contractor safety submissions, incident investigation reports, and proposed mitigation actions.

  • Produce safety performance reports and provide input for project-level key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Ensure accurate and timely incident reporting; collect and organize safety metrics and documentation.

  • Support development and delivery of safety-related training, presentations, and communication packages tailored to role-specific responsibilities.

  • Promote a dynamic lessons-learned culture to drive continuous improvement in project safety performance.

    Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and regulatory frameworks.

  • Strong experience with site audits, inspections, incident investigations, and CAPA processes.

  • Proven track record of successfully implementing safety management systems on complex infrastructure or civil construction projects.

  • Effective communicator with strong written and verbal skills to support internal and external reporting needs.

  • Adept at influencing cross-functional teams and facilitating safety culture change.

  • Skilled in managing competing priorities and maintaining responsiveness in dynamic field environments.

  • Technically proficient with Microsoft Office and relevant digital safety reporting systems.

  • Tunnel or transit infrastructure experience is a strong asset.

Education and Experience

  • Diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of site-based health and safety experience in construction or industrial environments.

  • Professional designation required: CRSP, CHSC, NCSO, or equivalent.

  • Direct experience with tunnel or rail/transit projects is required.

Field Requirements Field work may include exposure to inclement weather and physically demanding terrain.
