Job summary

Kruger Inc. is seeking a Safety Advisor to drive the safety journey at the Corner Brook mill and related units. The role partners with senior leaders to implement health and safety programs across site operations, ensuring regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.

The advisor will lead safety culture initiatives, coach leaders, and monitor KPIs while coordinating with unions, committees and external regulators to uphold Kruger’s safety standards.

Qualifications

• Deg/ diploma in OH&S, Eng, HR or related field.
• Canadian CRSP designation is an asset.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
• Ability to apply problem solving techniques to analyze issues.
• Aptitude to function as a Change Agent and foster creativity.
• Proficient use of computers.

OVERVIEW

At Kruger, our vision is that safety accountability resides with operational leaders at all levels of the organization. Reporting to the General Manager, the Safety Advisor is responsible for driving the organization's safety journey and advancing a culture in which safety is integrated into everyday operational decision‐making across all of our business units including Corner Brook Pulp & Paper, Deer Lake Power and our Woodlands Division.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Safety Advisor partners with leaders across the business to provide strategic guidance, coaching, and subject matter expertise on health and safety matters; and drives accountability on site to improve safety and business results. The role works closely with all levels of management, employees, and representative bodies, including the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, unions, and other employee committees, to support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs, policies, and practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Health & Safety Culture and Program Management

• Sustain a strong commitment to safety, ensuring safety is kept at the forefront and no compromises are encountered. Adhere to, promote, and exemplify company safety and environmental policies.


• Coach supervisors, superintendents and managers in effective application of safety leadership principles.


• Support leaders in conducting risk assessments, investigations, and corrective action planning; participating when appropriate.


• Identify both existing and upcoming gaps in existing safety programs to company standards, industry best practices and regulatory compliance and engage leadership for proactive solutions.


• Lead initiatives that strengthen employee engagement and participation in health and safety.


• Drive site's safety culture roadmap, establishing clear ownership and accountabilities across the organization.


• Champion a proactive approach to critical risk management, engaging operational leaders in identifying, assessing and mitigating critical risks.


• Monitor emerging health and safety risks and recommend improvement strategies.


• Serve as a management resource to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, ensuring committee effectiveness.


• Build effective relationships with regulators, contractors, unions, and corporate stakeholders.

Safety Management System and Budgeting

• Maintain and continuously improve the site's health and safety management system, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate standards, and industry best practices.


• Provide oversight of safety and training management systems, ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and effective use of safety, training, incident, and corrective action data.


• Monitor legislative and regulatory changes, lead internal and external audits, and support corrective action planning to ensure ongoing compliance.


• Analyze safety performance metrics and trends, establish meaningful KPIs, and provide reporting and recommendations to operational leaders and the Senior Leadership Team.


• Develop, support, and monitor safety and training budgets in collaboration with departmental leaders.


• Develop and implement strategies, programs, and procedures that strengthen safety performance and drive continuous improvement across the site.

DIRECT REPORTS

The Safety Advisor will be responsible for the direct supervision of:

• Safety & Training Coordinator

Coach, develop and manage all direct reports. Evaluate performance of direct reports by way of the Employee Development and Performance Appraisal Review (EDPAR).

QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Human Resources or a related field.


• Minimum of 10 years of work experience in Health & Safety in an industrial setting, with some experience dealing with senior leadership.


• Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, or other relevant designations are considered an asset.


• Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills


• Capacity to exercise problem solving techniques in the analysis of a problem.


• Aptitude to function as a Change Agent, to foster creativity and idea generation.


• Proficient use of computers
