Job description

We invite applications for the position of:
  • Program Worker - Interpreter - Elementary/Secondary, 27.95-28.75 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The current rate of pay is $34.07 per hour plus 16.3% in lieu of benefits (equivalent to $39.62 per hour).
Qualifications:

Bachelor of Arts is preferred; a combination of a diploma in Sign Language Interpretation and other coursework in ASL-English and Interpreting will be considered; active membership in provincial and/or national interpreter associations such as Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI); at least two years experience working as an interpreter; experience working with school-aged populations is preferred; proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) to provide message equivalent interpretations; willingness to work in an inclusionary setting supporting differentiated instruction with adapted and modified curriculum; ability to deal effectively with staff and students; meets the physical requirements of the position; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Duties are performed under the supervision of the school/district Principal or Vice Principal and the Director of Inclusive Education or designate. Responsibilities include:

  1. Following the guidance and leadership of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, learning support teacher, and classroom teachers.
  2. Maintaining familiarity with instructional vocabulary and concepts for classroom interpreting.
  3. Providing interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing students, classmates, and educational staff.
  4. Providing tutorial assistance to deaf and hard of hearing students when required and to other students when available.
  5. Carrying out personal and health care routines as directed.
  6. Providing interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings as required.
  7. Participating in student observation, data collection, and implementation of individual education plans.
  8. Providing information to school-based teams, itinerant staff, and relevant agency personnel as requested.
  9. Following proper work procedures, observing all regulations pertinent to the work, maintaining good working relationships, and cooperating to maintain a healthy learning and working environment.
  10. Performing other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  11. Supervising students as required by the Principal or Vice Principal.

Locations are determined by Inclusive Education and are subject to change.
