Job summary

Providence Health Care in Vancouver, BC, is seeking a Staff Nurse for Surgical Daycare to join a multidisciplinary team. You will prepare patients for surgery, support their recovery, and ensure safe transitions home within a dynamic hospital setting.

You will assess needs, develop care plans, and provide education for patients and families, including discharge planning. A minimum of one year recent surgical experience and active RN registration are required.

Qualifications

• Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (or equivalent).
• Completed perianesthesia or surgical nursing training is an asset.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.

Summary

Join our Surgical Daycare team at St. Paul’s Hospital! As part of our surgical program, Surgical Daycare supports patients before and after a wide range of surgical procedures, providing focused care, education, and support throughout their surgical journey.

As a Staff Nurse in Surgical Daycare, you’ll work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to prepare patients for surgery, support their recovery, and ensure they have the information and care they need for a safe transition home.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Assess patients’ physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs.
• Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise individualized care plans.
• Prepare and support patients throughout their pre- and post-operative care.
• Provide education to patients and families, including preparation for surgery and discharge planning.
• Monitor patients’ recovery and respond to changes in condition.
• Make referrals to appropriate resources as needed.
• Collaborate with and support nurses and other healthcare professionals.

What You Bring

Education

• Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, or in Residential Care and Mental Health, current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
• One year recent surgical experience. Successful completion of the Adolescent Care in Perianesthesia Nursing course within twelve weeks of appointment.

Your Day to Day:

• Assess patients and develop, implement, evaluate, and adjust individualized nursing care plans using clinical judgment and evidence-based practice.

• Provide direct nursing care, monitor patient progress, respond to changes in condition, and intervene in urgent or life‑threatening situations.

• Document assessments, care plans, patient progress, interventions, and discharge plans.

• Provide education and support to patients and families, including health promotion and discharge preparation.

• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team and provide guidance and support to other nursing and care staff.

• Coordinate discharge planning and connect patients and families with appropriate community resources.

• Participate in staff and student education, quality improvement initiatives, best‑practice development, and nursing research.

• Advocate for patient rights, dignity, privacy, autonomy, and access to information.
