Job summary

Cape Breton University invites applications for a full-time continuing position as Rink Attendant. The successful candidate will support day-to-day operations and maintenance of the rink facility, including ice plant duties and off-ice responsibilities during off-hours, with a focus on safety and proper equipment use.

The role requires physical activity, willingness to obtain necessary certifications, and the ability to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays as scheduled by the Arena

• Current First Aid course, AED and CPR, or willingness to obtain and re-certify as required.

Responsibilities

• Perform ice maintenance and arena facility upkeep while ice plant operates.
• Maintain building and equipment, including preventive maintenance.
• Assist in off-ice activities, event facilitation, and campus operations when ice is not in service.
• Operate a variety of equipment and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Work shift includes weekends and holidays as demanded by events.

Job description

Cape Breton University invites applications for a full-time continuing position as Rink Attendant. We are seeking a candidate who is available to commence employment as soon as possible and join our team in supporting the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the rink facility.

The successful candidate, during ice plant operation is responsible for ice maintenance, building and equipment maintenance (including preventive maintenance) in the Arena. When the ice plant is not in service, the arena will function as an off-ice facility, during those times the successful candidate will also participate in maintenance and event facilitation in the arena complex, other recreational facilities, or around the campus; and operate a variety of equipment in the performance of duties.

The Rink Attendant will have shift work, including weekends and holidays, in response to event demands. Working hours are scheduled by the Arena Manager.

Working conditions and physical effort:

Work involves exposure to chemicals and corrosive materials and the operation of equipment. Incumbent may be exposed to temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke and/or loud noises.

• The incumbent must follow all safety precautions and use personal protective equipment.
• Work may involve the use of a variety of equipment.
• Considerable physical activity including heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, walking, etc.

Physical work is a primary part of this position.

Qualifications of this role are:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Power Engineering Class 4 ticket or Refrigeration Class 2.
• Minimum of one (1) year related experience.
• Current First Aid course, AED and CPR, or willingness to obtain and re-certify as required.
• Demonstrated initiative to carry out job responsibilities with general direction including good judgment skills.
• Physically fit in order to be able to carry out the requirements of the position.
• Ability to wear a respirator.
• Demonstrated good work safety record.
• Knowledge of regulatory procedures, and provincial Codes/Standards.
• Thorough knowledge of area plant operations and safety protocols.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, the N.S. OHS Act, WHMIS.

The union affiliation of this position is with the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union. Local 19, Maintenance Classification (MOS).
