Job Description

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  1. Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and moral support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications.
  2. Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports.
  3. Provides lifeskills training (personal hygiene, mental and physical health, communication, anger management, etc.) for clients/residents.
  4. Acts as client advocate: acts as positive role model.
  5. Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations).
  6. Coordinates client care relating to security issues; performs bed checks and room/personal searches.
  7. Handles the admission, orientation, evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules, and discharge procedures; ensures the ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline.
  8. May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, and receipting of same.
  9. Answers the program department telephone and records/remits messages.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

This Position Description will be reviewed and/or amended as required to meet prevailing requirements of the Ministry contract and/or The Salvation Army on a regular basis as deemed necessary.

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED

The successful job applicant will have completed up to two (2) years of Community College.

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS

The successful applicant will hold/have:

  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis
  • WHMIS training
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training
MNIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPEREINCE

The incumbent must have the following experience before hire: One year but less than three years of prior related experience including, frontline work in a social service setting (with women/children), lifeskills and experience in a related field.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DETERITY REQUIRED

The performance of the job requires keyboarding, sitting for long periods of time, and occasionally packing client/resident belongings.

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED

The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, frequently interacting with clients, attentive listening, and moderate attention when recording information.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES

The incumbent’s responsibility for Financial Resources: The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES

The incumbent’s responsibility for Human Resources: The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. He/She is responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised. The incumbent may provide advice on hiring, firing decisions but not other supervisory decisions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in an office and a program department – Shelter, Treatment facilities.

The incumbent works under generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:

  • May have to deal with angry people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Work schedule affecting lifestyle

The incumbent may have little to no travel required.

The incumbent carries a pager/walkie talkie and works shifts.

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:

  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Exposure to bodily fluids
  • Sharp objects
  • Other dangerous situations
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in additions to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis

Salary and Position Grade: Salary range: Based on Collective Agreement

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $19.53 to $20.15 with a maximum of $20.76. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
