Stella’s Circle Community Services Inc. is seeking a Residential Counsellor (Relief/Part Time) for Naomi Centre, an emergency shelter for young women aged 18–29.

You will provide supportive counselling, assist with housing searches and daily living tasks, and work within a strengths‑based, harm‑reduction framework to empower residents. Responsibilities include intake, documentation, meals, advocacy, and coordination with community resources.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree in Human Services or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of harm reduction and Housing First approaches.
• Experience working in a residential setting.
• Ability to work with marginalized and vulnerable individuals.

Responsibilities

• Orient new residents to Naomi Centre.
• Provide supportive counselling to participants.
• Empower residents using a strengths-based approach to foster independence.
• Use conflict resolution to reduce communal living issues.
• Assist with applications for various supports/services.
• Support residents with everyday living tasks and housing searches.
• Maintain documentation of resident files and shift logs.
• Complete intake assessments, admissions and departures.
• Accompany participants to community appointments as requested.
• Provide access to and prepare healthy meals and snacks.
• Refer participants to community resources based on individual needs.
• Advocate for participants when necessary.
• Attend and participate in bi-weekly staff meetings.

The Position

As a Residential Counsellor, your primary role is to provide support and guidance to clients who are seeking emergency shelter and outreach services for young women ages 18 – 29 who need safe, supportive temporary housing. The young women who reside at Naomi Centre receive support that encourages making informed choices and decisions, potentially leading to greater stability in regard to personal relationships, finances, emotional well‑being and housing so they can return to their family or community. Counsellors at Naomi Centre work as part of a staff team to ensure quality services to young women.

What You’ll Do

• Orients new residents to Naomi Centre.
• Provides supportive counselling to participants.
• Works from a strengths‑based perspective to empower and encourage residents to make decisions for themselves and teach life skills.
• Uses conflict resolution skills to reduce and help resolve communal living issues.
• Helps with filling out applications for various supports/services.
• Provides residents and former residents support and assistance with everyday living tasks and assisting with housing searches.
• Maintains proper documentation of resident files and shift logs.
• Completes intake assessments, admissions and departures.
• Accompanies participants to community appointments as requested.
• Provides access to and prepares healthy meals and snacks.
• Refers participants to resources in the community based on their individual needs.
• Advocates for participants when necessary.
• Attends and participates in bi‑weekly staff meetings.

What You’ll Bring

• Post‑secondary degree in the Human Services field or equivalent education and work experience, especially in the area of Mental Health and Addictions.
• Knowledge of harm reduction and Housing First approaches.
• Knowledge of working with marginalized and vulnerable individuals.
• Experience working within a residential setting.
• Strong interpersonal skills while being able to work independently.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi‑task and to prioritize work.
• Attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work under deadlines with frequent interruptions.

The Details

The hourly rate for this position starts at $31.37 with shift differentials for weekday evening and weekend hours. This is a relief/part‑time position in a 24‑hour emergency shelter and requires shift work, including days, evenings, nights and weekends.
