Research Technologist I, Molecular Medicine

Position Description

Dr. Julien's laboratory at The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute is looking for a Research Technologist I to assist in executing protein production and laboratory experiments for the development of vaccines and antibodies for the treatment of infectious diseases. We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic scientist with experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, and in vitro assay development who can thrive in a highly collaborative research setting.


Here's What You'll Get To Do:

  • Work under the direction of senior staff to execute protein production from mammalian expression system for the generation of antigens and antibodies.
  • Develop and / or optimize experimental methods to expand in vitro ligand binding assays.
  • Grow your knowledge and technical skill set around the use of vaccines and antibodies for the prevention of infectious diseases.
  • Support and collaborate with project team members to meet deliverables and timelines.
  • Contribute towards the development of guidelines, procedures and standards.
  • Analyze, interpret, and report experimental results in written, verbal or graphical form as required to senior staff and at lab meetings.

Here's What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor or Masters of Science degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Immunology with 2+ years of wet lab experience.
  • Experience expressing and purifying proteins for downstream biochemical assays and/or structural biology. High-throughput protein expression is considered an asset.
  • Experience with one of E. coli, yeast, insect, and/or mammalian protein expression systems is required, while experience with mammalian protein expression systems (e.g. HEK 293, CHO) is preferred.
  • Experience performing in vitro binding assays such as BLI, SPR, ITC, and/or ELISA. Experience with flow cytometry is considered an asset.
  • Ability to function in a timeline-driven, dynamic environment, and to adapt to new techniques and protocols.
  • Demonstrated competency in written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Committed to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative and productive scientific projects.
  • A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.

Dr. Julien's laboratory focuses on the molecular characterization of antibodies by studies of their interactions with cell surface receptors in therapeutic development, and with pathogens guiding vaccine design primarily against Plasmodium falciparum malaria, HIV-1 and COVID-19. Dr. Julien's laboratory is located in the Molecular Medicine Program of The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at SickKids, a 21-story, 750,000 square-foot facility that incorporates an open-concept design, state-of-the-art research facilities, and collaborative workspaces.
