The Research Technician will be assigned to and provide support with the execution of field, greenhouse and lab activities for various internal and contract projects administered by the Program Groups with Research & Development. This contract position will primarily focus on projects related to urban forestry with the Plant Responses & the Environment Program.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide support with the execution of urban forestry research.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring of urban forestry experiments, including sampling plants, soils and substrates in the field and greenhouse.
  • Lab support may include: soil grinding, sieving, weighing, and additional support for soil and substrate lab tests subject to appropriate training.
  • Field support may include: soil sampling, monitoring field research trials, transplanting, weeding, scouting, mowing.
  • Keep up to date on methods for plant health assessments and undergo training for specific methodology where required.

Contract Term:

Duration: May 2025 – August 2025

Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree or Diploma in plant or horticultural sciences, greenhouse technician, agriculture or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of greenhouse or tree nursery experience and be familiar with many aspects of plant physiology and identification.
  • One (1) year experience working in the field or greenhouse in support of scientific research.
  • Tree nursery experience: previous employment involving production in tree nurseries for the urban market, along with tree knowledge and identification skills is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including report writing, and clear communication of research findings to lay audiences.
