Job description

UHN is Canada’s No. 1 hospital and the world’s No. 1 publicly funded hospital. With 10 sites and more than 44,000 TeamUHN members, UHN consists of Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, The Michener Institute of Education, and West Park Healthcare Centre. As Canada's top research hospital, the scope of biomedical research and complexity of cases at UHN have made it a national and international source for discovery, education, and patient care.

A Research Technician I position is available at the McEwen Stem Cell Institute. The successful candidate will contribute to studies aimed at developing novel therapies for ischemic heart disease based on pluripotent stem cells. Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician I will work with team members in manufacturing stem cell-derived cardiac cell types based on established protocols and standardized techniques. The candidate will support the work of other lab members by preparing reagents, maintaining equipment, checking inventories, placing orders, and assisting/coordinating other routine activities in the lab.

The candidate may also have the opportunity to assist in the delivery of the cell products in animal models (rodent and swine) of cardiac injury under the training and supervision of a highly experienced animal surgeon.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. More than 6 months of prior experience in routine cell culture and quality control (e.g. flow cytometry and other molecular techniques).
  2. Core competency in written and verbal communication as well as the communication and maintenance of records of experimental data.
  3. Ability to work well with people from different disciplines and with varying levels of technical expertise.
  4. Availability to complete cell culture duties at least one weekend day per month (Saturday or Sunday, ~4 hours per day, as part of your 37.5 hour work week).

Strong preference will be given to candidates available more than one weekend day per month. Prior experience with pluripotent stem cell culture, differentiation, and manipulation is a major asset. Experience in survival surgery or surgical procedures in animal models is also an asset.

For current UHN employees, only those who have successfully completed their probationary period, have a good employee record along with satisfactory attendance in accordance with UHN's attendance management program, and possess all the required experience and qualifications should apply.
