Compensation Range

$5,365.42 - $7,709.92 CAD Monthly

Job Summary

The Silva21 project, funded by the NSERC Alliance Grants Program is recruiting a Research Scientist to work in a term position with benefits (1 year). The Research Scientist will work on a project to carry out a Commercial Thinning (CT) demonstration project in Quesnel, BC. The position will work primarily with multiple partners such as the Three Rivers Community Forest, Integrated Operations Group, West Fraser Mills, City of Quesnel’s Forestry Initiatives Program, Natural Resources Finland (Luke) and Metsäkeskus. The position will be based in Dominik Roeser’s lab at UBC. The scientist will design, collect, organize, and develop field observation data in support of the study. The development of these data will require close collaboration with university scientists who are actively researching the characteristics of these states in the field, as well as exploring other available BC forestry datasets that may be essential to the success of the project. This position is well suited to those who have experience and strong interest in silviculture, fire ecology as well as production and costing studies.

Organizational Status

Reports to Dominik Roeser, works closely with Erin Robinson, and contributes to the larger Silva21 project team.

Work Performed

  • Meeting with project partners to develop project design.
  • Design, refine, and implement the study methodology
  • Interpret study outputs in the context of future applications
  • Coordinate information sharing with broader project team
  • Evaluate, collect, and integrate data and information from a wide range of subject matter areas including forest ecology, fire ecology, silviculture and forest operations.
  • Contribute to popular and peer-reviewed publications

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position will contribute to the design, implementation of the study as well as the data analysis. Failure to contribute, meet deadlines or communicate in a timely manner will negatively impact the overall team and project

Supervision Received

This position requires substantial independent work. In addition to supervision from direct supervisor, team members of the Silva21 team will provide feedback, support, and research guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in forestry or related disciplines with proficiency in ecological modeling preferred.

Expertise in Geographic Information System software such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS is required

Expertise in the design and implementation of silvicultural studies is preferred

Expertise with data analysis is required

Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting
