Job description

Description

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Part-time Fixed Termposition is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Coordinator will work closely with a team of researchers in palliative care, nephrology, and family medicine to improve the health of persons living with serious life-limiting diseases such as kidney failure. This position will play a critical and dynamic role in providing project level support to facilitate health service initiatives within palliative and supportive care.

The Research Coordinator reports to the Research Manager for the Division of Palliative Medicine, within the Department of Oncology at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine.

Approximately 21 hours a week.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Administrative Activities

  • Sets up and manages project meetings (including taking minutes, preparing meeting documentation and creating project presentations)
  • Works with appropriate staff and University departments to assist researchers in setting up contracts/agreements for external vendors, persons of interest and contractors in compliance with University policies
  • May support financial operations (e.g. submitting expense claims, purchasing supplies, processing invoices)

Research Study Implementation, Conduct and Analysis

  • Works with study investigators to develop study protocols and associated documents (e.g., procedure manuals, recruitment materials, informed consent forms, enrollment logs, master lists, case report forms, interview guides, surveys)
  • Ensures required contracts, confidentiality agreements, and approvals are in place where appropriate
  • Supports clinical staff and stakeholders with resources and training applicable to the research protocol
  • Submits ethics applications, amendments, renewals, and adverse events to Research Ethics Board(s)
  • Works with research and clinical personnel to coordinate recruitment of study participants
  • Recruits and consents study participants according to GCP and ICH guidelines
  • Monitors enrolment goals and modifies recruitment strategies as necessary
  • Participates in data collection (e.g., conducting focus groups and interviews, administering questionnaires, conducting chart reviews, entering data into research databases)
  • Participates in qualitative data analyses (e.g., sorting, coding, analysis using NVivo software) and quantitative data analyses (e.g., descriptive and/or statistical analyses, maintaining databases)
  • Maintains accurate, timely, complete documentation and records

Communication, Reporting, and Knowledge Translation Activities

  • Liaises and communicates with key stakeholder groups to promote awareness of projects
  • Fosters collaborative relationships with stakeholders from health care, palliative care teams, Nephrology Research Group, University of Calgary staff, and clinical teams
  • Assists with writing abstracts, reports, manuscripts and presentations
  • Generates presentations on behalf of the research team(s), to be used when presenting to various internal and external stakeholders. Assists with presenting (e.g., at conferences, meetings) as required and interested
  • Generates various reports as required (e.g., for funders)
  • Supports investigators with grant applications (e.g., literature reviews, drafting application content, drafting budgets, obtaining institutional approvals)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a health-related field (e.g., epidemiology, health services research)
  • 3-5 years of related research experience
  • Must have experience with qualitative research methods (including conducting and analyzing qualitative interviews), quantitative research methods, and knowledge synthesis
  • Experience with nominal group technique and Delphi methods would be an asset
  • Experience with electronic data capture systems (e.g., REDCap) would be an asset
  • Knowledge and/or experience with secondary data sources for research such as electronic medical records and administrative data would be an asset
  • Analytic skills and knowledge of statistical software (e.g., Stata, NVivo) would be an asset
  • Working knowledge of Alberta health systems that may include knowledge of health informatics, the Health Information Act, Alberta privacy legislation and Alberta Health Services Clinical Information System
  • Knowledge of Alberta research ethics board policies and procedures (e.g., ethics applications, amendments, annual renewals, reporting of adverse events in IRISS), ICH/GCP requirements, and Tri-Council policies for research involving humans is required
  • Experience with academic writing (e.g., manuscripts, research reports, conference presentations)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, ability to take initiative, make decisions and troubleshoot problems
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple deliverables within agreed timelines, and to thrive and deliver results in a fast-paced team environment
  • Previous experience organizing, facilitating, and chairing meetings
  • Proven ability to deal tactfully and decisively with sensitive issues while maintaining confidentiality
