Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate I for the Institute for Translational Medicine and Science.

The Research Associate I will support research on signal transduction mechanisms affecting airway tone in asthma, COPD , and fibrotic lung diseases, with a focus on how environmental factors and respiratory pathogens alter airway function. The Research Associate will perform a broad range of experiments related to evaluating cellular responses generated by glucocorticoids and cAMP-elevating agents, encompassing cell and molecular biology, tissue culture and animal work techniques. Primary responsibilities will include culturing different lung cell types (both primary cells and cell lines), performing human and murine Precision Cut Lung Slice ( PCLS ) experiments, performing immunological assays (immunofluorescent staining, ELISA , western blots, immunoprecipitations, and flow cytometry/ FACS ), and molecular biology techniques ( PCR & real time- PCR techniques, DNA and mRNA sample preparation, plasmid DNA preparation, DNA subcloning, and siRNA/shRNA transfections). Additionally, the Research Associate I will focus on understanding how exposure to environmental factors and respiratory pathogens contribute to changes in airway function, will have an excellent work ethic, and be both motivated and productive.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Plans and executes research projects as assigned
  • Prepares high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as data for research conference presentations and grant applications
  • Provides supervision and guidance to junior staff, undergraduates, and graduate students
  • Cell Culture work: media preparation, quality control testing, and daily maintenance of human airway muscle cell lines, epithelial cell lines, fibroblast cell lines, & air liquid interface co-cultures
  • Performs human and murine Precision Cut Lung Slice ( PCLS ) experiments
  • Conducts Molecular Biology work: RNA / DNA isolation & purification, PCR & real time PCR , shRNA & siRNA transfections, etc.

This position requires a fully on-site work arrangement.

  • Ph.D. degree in one of the following fields: biology, cell biology, pharmacology, molecular biology, or other related fields, plus 2 years of laboratory research experience.
  • Research experience in dissecting/understanding cellular signal transduction utilizing primary human cell lines is required for this position.
  • Expertise in performing basic scientific assays including: RNA / DNA extraction, and protein preparation, PCR & real time- PCR , western blot analysis, ELISA are essential.
  • A strong background in cell and molecular biology, and tissue culture are a prerequisite for this position.
Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, clear evidence of scientific productivity, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates with pulmonary research experience are preferred.
  • Experience in understanding big data analysis (RNAseq, mass spec/phosphoproteomic analysis, etc.), pathway analysis, and cAMP compartmentation are a plus, but not required.
  • Tissue culture hoods and incubators, centrifuges, electrophoresis apparatus for proteins and nucleic acids, Nanodrop, electroporator, flow cytometry, thermal cyclers, light, confocal, and fluorescent microscopes, microtome, cryostat, vibratome, ELISA plate washer, ELISA plate reader, and other equipment as needed.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • Occasional lifting 25-50 lbs., intermittently sitting/standing/stooping, typically sitting at a desk or table.
  • Must be able to work at a computer for an extended period and must be able to operate specialized laboratory/scientific equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
  • Biosafety Level 2 and 2+ laboratory environment working with human and animal fluids and tissue. Requires laboratory safety training.
  • Caustic and toxic chemicals.
  • Handle controlled substances such as pharmaceutical, radiological, or hazardous materials.
