Job Summary

The Research Assistant Technician will be responsible for providing research support to trauma research projects, including screening potential cases for inclusion, survey administration, data collection, and data entry, as well as assistance with data cleaning and synthesis as necessary.

Organizational Status

The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff, distributed across British Columbia. There are nine divisions in the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).

The incumbent will report to Dr. Naisan Garraway, Principal Investigator (PI). The incumbent will be working most closely with Leah Rosenkrantz, Research Manager, and at times with the two other PIs: Dr. Phillip Dawe (Department of Surgery) and Dr. Michael Schwandt (School of Population and Public Health) and may take direction from any of these team members. As the incumbent will be involved in patient recruitment, they will also work with healthcare personnel at VGH to navigate and coordinate logistics around consent conversations.

Work Performed

  • Assists with enrolment of potential research participants at VGH (Trauma Service) by screening for study eligibility, recruiting eligible participants, obtaining informed consent, and if applicable, administering a survey to the participant.
  • Supports data collection on patients enrolled in studies through abstraction of personal health and clinical information from electronic medical records (e.g., CST Cerner), medical charts, and other available sources.
  • Enters clinical and scientific data into pre-existing spreadsheets and databases, and manages data for specific studies, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Maintains research study records in electronic and paper format ensuring that information is accurately completed and appropriately saved/filed in pre-existing filing system.
  • Provides weekly updates to the Research Manager and periodically updates PIs about the status of research projects at research meetings.
  • Communicates with staff and clinicians on site and at collaborating sites to ensure adherence to research protocols.
  • Develops and maintains relationships to ensure participant compliance throughout the life cycle of the research project.
  • Attends research project meetings.
  • Works with hospital personnel to arrange logistics for research studies.
  • Contributes to a respectful, inclusive working environment.
  • Performs other responsibilities, as required.

Working Conditions

Shared office space in the Tzu Chi Building (VGH Trauma Services).

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Technician is expected to work under general supervision. The Research Assistant Technician exercises professional judgment and initiative in the conduct of and in coordinating clinical research studies. The incumbent will work with the Research Manager and with other members of the team to ensure that study procedures are performed consistent with the study protocol, applicable hospital procedures, ethical guidelines and regulatory policies. The incumbent is expected to work in a professional manner exercising poise and discretion especially when dealing with vulnerable patients and their families, and with sensitive medical information. Inappropriate disclosure of research participants’ personal information would contravene privacy legislation and could result in legal action. Errors in data, reference materials or publications, if detected, would result in delays and requirements for additional resources to obtain or validate data.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in a related field.
  • Two years of previous clinical research experience.
  • Proficient with basic computer software such as MS Excel, Outlook, Teams, One Drive etc.
  • Previous experience with SAS or R statistical analysis software.
  • Previous experience with Covidence and RevMan systematic review software.
  • Previous experience with REDCap databases.
  • Training and previous experience with electronic medical records (preferably CST Cerner).
  • Completion of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2) Course on Research Ethics and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work, multi-task, schedule and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective oral and written communications, with the ability to compose clear and grammatically correct correspondence and business documents.
  • Ability to deal with diverse populations in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.
