Research Assistant II
GEMINI (www.geminimedicine.ca) is a unique big data platform in the Canadian healthcare landscape, using advanced methods and analytics to extract and standardize data captured in hospital electronic health records. GEMINI currently exists at 30+ ON hospitals and supports the Ontario General Medicine Quality Improvement Network, GeMQIN, a provincial network led by Ontario Health to improve care for general medicine hospital patients. General medicine patients represent 40% of emergency admissions to hospital and are the largest group of hospitalized patients. GEMINI is a collaborative data and analytics platform for all Ontario hospitals to accelerate research and quality improvement, leading to excellent hospital care.
The GEMINI team is currently seeking a Research Assistant II to join its growing research efforts and in particular, to support an exciting project co-lead by physicians and scientists from GEMINI and the University of Toronto Faculty Computer Science. The primary role of the Research Assistant II is to lead patient recruitment for a large multi-site research study that aims to improve sepsis management by developing and deploying robust machine learning tools. Other core duties include the development of research materials and the management of study data (e.g. data collection, data entry, and data cleaning). The Research Assistant II will also be co-developing study reports, preparing/submitting research ethics board (REB) applications and other regulatory documents that are required to carry out a multi-institutional study.
We are looking for a candidate with strong interpersonal and communication skills, who is highly motivated, organized, and possesses excellent attention to detail. You will be joining a dynamic and mission-driven team of clinicians, researchers, and quality improvement experts who come from General Internal Medicine, Biostatistics/Epidemiology, Computer Science, Engineering and Machine Learning backgrounds.
Duties And Responsibilities
Research Activities (80%):
Perform patient recruitment initiatives and obtain patient consent
Administer questionnaires and conduct interviews with research participants
Prepare and provide oversight of study materials and regulatory documents
Maintain research study database and data entry logs
Perform scientific literature searches
Assist with the preparation of REB applications, research agreements, and contract submission forms
Maintain departmental procedures and research protocols
Perform Cross-functional And/or Other Responsibilities As Assigned
Administrative Support (20%):
Schedule working group meetings for the research team, taking meeting minutes and tracking action items
Update and track status of research documents, update standard operating procedures
Prepare reimbursement forms and payment requisitions for study-related invoices and expenses
Develop memorandums, letters, presentations, and reports for various collaborators such as funders, researchers, and study participants
Qualifications
At least 3 years of related experience is required
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills
Excellent problem identification and problem-solving skills
Strong clinical knowledge and experience with review patient charts
Experience with patient recruitment in inpatient settings is an asset
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Docs applications
Ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work discretely with and protect confidential information
Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
Ability to produce high-quality work in accordance with Hospital standards
Experience in programming and managing online surveys and databases (e.g. REDCap) is an asset
