Research Assistant II

GEMINI (www.geminimedicine.ca) is a unique big data platform in the Canadian healthcare landscape, utilizing advanced methods and analytics to extract and standardize data from hospital electronic health records. GEMINI operates at over 30 Ontario hospitals and supports the Ontario General Medicine Quality Improvement Network (GeMQIN), led by Ontario Health, to improve care for general medicine hospital patients. General medicine patients account for 40% of emergency hospital admissions and constitute the largest group of hospitalized patients. GEMINI is a collaborative platform for data and analytics, aiming to accelerate research and quality improvement across Ontario hospitals.

The GEMINI team is seeking a Research Assistant II to support its expanding research initiatives, particularly a project co-led by physicians and scientists from GEMINI and the University of Toronto Faculty of Computer Science. The main responsibility of this role is to lead patient recruitment for a multi-site research study focused on improving sepsis management through machine learning tools. Additional duties include developing research materials, managing study data (collection, entry, cleaning), and co-developing study reports. The role also involves preparing and submitting research ethics applications and other regulatory documents for multi-institutional studies.

We seek a candidate with strong interpersonal and communication skills, high motivation, organization, and excellent attention to detail. You will join a dynamic, mission-driven team comprising clinicians, researchers, and experts in biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science, engineering, and machine learning.

Responsibilities
  1. Research Activities (80%):
  2. Conduct patient recruitment and obtain consent
  3. Administer questionnaires and conduct interviews
  4. Prepare study materials and regulatory documents
  5. Maintain research databases and logs
  6. Perform literature searches
  7. Assist with REB applications and research agreements
  8. Maintain research protocols and procedures
  9. Administrative Support (20%):
  10. Schedule meetings, take minutes, track action items
  11. Update research documents and SOPs
  12. Prepare reimbursement and payment forms
  13. Create reports and presentations for stakeholders
Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to learn new skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Clinical knowledge and experience reviewing patient charts
  • Experience with inpatient patient recruitment is an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
  • Discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive information
  • Experience with online surveys and databases (e.g., REDCap) is an asset
